This is the brace that runs from the steering column up to the cowl however I can not get it to fit in there. It seems to be about an inch too long.
There is a mystery to this part and I don't know the answer. I did the tear down on the truck and took all parts to the blaster. I don't remember removing this brace and when the truck came back the brace was removed and about 1.5 inches cut off from it. I welded it back but it won't fit. I can't say I didn't remove it when I did the tear down but I know for sure I didn't cut the end off.
I would appreciate some advice on this subject, a measurement of your brace and or pictures of where on the cowl it mounts.

The flat end goes to the firewall, the end with the arch goes above the steering column. Sometimes you have to give them some hammer lovin' if you know what I mean. bolt to the firewall loosely, then insert bolts through steering column mount. This gives you wiggle room. Once all bolts are in, tighten them all down.

    Maybe this helps?

The brace is above the column, you just can hardly see it. Same color as the dash.

    What I know now

    Ziggy,

Thanks for the smile Zig. It took me three years to disassemble and reassemble my 54. I got lost in AD "what now?" land many times, wish I had had the wisdom of the several experts here 7-8 years ago.

The very first thing my friend KC, who always solved my big and small issues in assembly, and I did when we got the truck together was drive over to the Sonic and eat burgers in it.

    That was cool.

    There you go!

Jim~ That is EXACTLY what I'm planning to do! I've already warned my wife and daughter about this plan.

    Sonic!

Too funny. My wife and I made the Sonic trip just this last Friday. It wasn't exactly the first trip. A parade was first. But, I have been working through some bugs (alternator and transmission) and didn't want to break down with SWMBO. I now feel like it's reliable. It's handling the 100 degree heat with no problem. So, Sonic on Friday, cruising the countryside on Saturday, church on Sunday, and today I drove it to work. :D

Isn't it a great feeling to drive these old trucks? I love driving mine (even in primer)
