Looks like the reproduction tachometers for 60-66 trucks is for V8s only. Any one know of an alterrnative for us straight sixes?
Part Number Well, I found some of the answer. Someone at Stovebolt posted this some time ago. I don't have the parts book so I can't verify the numbers. Apparently there WAS a tach made just for sixes. How many you reckon are still out there? GM 1960-66 Tachometers 3171216 is listed as the head assembly for '61-'62 series 10 thru 30 (no distinction between 6- or 8-cylinder). A transmitter is only listed for the '61-'62 8-cyl. units. 3852111 is listed for '64-'66 series 10 thru 30 6-cyl 3839947 is listed for '63-'66 series 10 thru 30 8-cyl. units.
They're probably around, just a matter of finding one. You could use a tach adapter with an 8-cylinder unit instead. I've been watching for 6 cylinder tachs for the 67-72 years, I've got one and have seen a few more over the past few years, the 8-cylinder tachs are a lot more common. Bob
Thanks, Bob. I'll be watching. What is a tach adapter? SOme guage shops have responded to my question saying they think they could convert a V8 tach to work on a six.
I'm sure it's actually very simple to alter the electronics of the tach to make it work for a 6-cylinder, it's a little above my level of expertise though! Any reputable shop that restores/works on old gages should be capable of figuring it out. A tach adapter would do the same thing as modifying the tach itself but does it in a separate box or circuit board. I may just use the 8-cylinder tach that I have and let it go at that, the way I drive now they're mostly just for looks anyway! Bob
