For derusting suspension parts (and wheel hubs, brakee, etc) what's the best approach? I'm wary to use acid as I don't want to cause acid embrittlement in these parts. I'm going to blast/sand down each part but still need a way to kill all the rust (I'd usually use Phosphoric acid). List of things I'm looking at: Control Arms Torsion Bars Wheel Hubs Brake parts Steering linkage Rear Springs (rear coils on 1960) I've seen a product called Rusteco that would work but it's something like $80 for 2 quarts. Any ideas are helpful. -glaser06
Yeah, I've WD'd the heck out of most of the parts, but that doesn't get rid of the rust. I've got most of the pieces freed up or off, I just need to clean the rust off of them.
dont sand blast controll arms or any linkages that have joints sand will get under the boots if u do it might as replace ball joints idd use a wire wheel or sanding pads on a angle grinder
Blast - treat with OSPHO (Phosphoric Acid) let dry avoid breathing fumes- scuff to remove OSPHO surface residue if present- prime and topcoat. Light treatment with OSPHO will not cause acid embrittlement that I am aware of.
what about products like rustoleum spray paint or por-15 I was thinkin about using either or, only after hittin the parts with a wire brush
POR-15 is for rust encapsulation and not for the treatment of bare metal to prevent rust. It is meant to be applied directly to rusted material ( after knocking the big chunks off)to prevent further corrosion. Val
I'm in Land Park !! Stop by Suzie's Burgers tomorrow night after 6. 30th and P Streets !! Street Rod Cruise in !!! Val
electrolysis i used this method on a bunch of parts it works fantastic what you need: container big enough to submerse part washing soda water battery charger you can get instuctions off google i tottaly recommend this as the best way for small parts
go to kregan or ace harware they have a rust/paint removing wheel that you put on the end of a drill this thing works wonders they wear out fast but at $10 a wheel its cheap it only took me 2 wheels to strip my entire front end and one door down to bare metal
