I FLIPPED THE RING GEAR ON FLYWHEEL. I PUT THE STARTER IN AND TURNED BY HAND AND IT SOUNDS LIKE THE GEARS ARE NOT LINING UP IAM NOT READY TO PUT JUICE TO THE STARTER YET NO OIL AND OTHER PARTS THAT NEED TO GO ON . I TOOK THE STARTER OFF ABOUT THREE TIMES AND SAME THING. I HAVE A 216 ENG IS THE RING GEAR THE SAME ON BOTH SIDES??? WELL IF I HAVE TOO I WILL PULL ENG/TRANS OUT AND START OVER. WOULD BETTER TO FIND OUT NOW BEFORE I PUT THE FRONT END ON. THANKS ROBERT
Just curious I have never flipped a ring gear. Why did you flip yours? Was it not engaging with the starter before you flipped it? Was it badly worn? No advice to offer, just curious.
Robert, The folks which rebuilt my engine flipped the gear and my starter is working. Years ago when I use to/could work on my own cars and trucks I would have to sometimes shim the starters to get the to act right. That may be your hang-up. Charles
Flywheel ring gear By flipping the ring gear, you now have one side of the teeth worn in the wrong direction. THIS WILL CHEW UP YOUR STARTER DRIVE. I suggest you flip it back or buy a new one. chevsofthe40s has new ones.
Ring Gear Fun O.K. , you cannot flip it as one inside lip has a shoulder but you can and should , remove it and rotate it 1/4 turn in the direction the flywheel turns before re-installing it *if* you have a worn spot on the teeth . This has been discussed before . The 12 volt ring gear has a different tooth count than the 6 volt one does , that's in the archives too ~ you cannot simply slap on a 12 volt starter . It's fine to run 12 volts through your old 6 volt starter , unless you keep it way out of tune so it needs two minutes of cranking to start , the 6 volt starter will last nearly forever running 12 volts through it . If you have a solenoid on top of the starter , you'll need to match the solenoid to the truck's voltage. If you're just worried about the old parts working , nevermind my babbles ,it should be fine , put some oil in the engine and hook up the battery , see if it cranks O.K. .
Where's Nate ? I'm here , just late is all ~ I broke a motor mount on the old Mercedes last night and struggled four hours with it before giving up and taking it to my buddie's independant garage this morning ~ I really cannot work well with this fu$%ing pinched spinal cord I suppose I should be grateful for the sauna like sweatbath I had in the 94° heat.... -Nate
Ring gear Ok the ring gear was worn one side with a few bad spots. I had the starter rebuilt one of the fist things i did after i got the truck and kept it 6 volt before i took out the engine it would start truck just fine. A matter of seconds no long term cranking. With the gear flipped its like a new gear on it. So i will fill eng with oil a go from there. I just heard the sounds and thought now what? Thanks for all the info and will try all options. Robert
Grinding Starter O.K. Robert ; You didn;t say if it's a pedal starter or a solenoid operated one ~ the pedal typ , the switch on the top of the starter has slots and sometimes it's mis adjusted so the starter begins turning before the gear is enguged , loosen the screws and slide the switch , re-tighten the screws and try again .
That's adjustable too ~ loosen the screws and slide the solenoid towards the _front_ of the truck , a little bit of movement goes a long ways .
