My 1959 Chevy with 235 engine has the original oil type air filter. I cannot get the filter apart to clean the foam insert. Does anyone no how these filters come apart? I think mine is just stuck together. It is the original filter so I dont want to damage it. Any tips on how to get the filter apart would be greatly apprecciated.

    Thanks

If yours is like mine, you remove the wing nut and the upper piece simply lifts off. Here's a couple pics of mine.

The upper piece contains the filter element, which looks much like giant brillo pad material. My bet is that yours is stuck and in need of a good soaking!

    Ken,

I can get mine apart to this point. I was just wondering how you get the brillow type element out of the top part of the filter for cleaning. Does the element come out or do you just soak the top half of the filter and the element. What do you use to clean the filter? Do you use oil in the filter?

    Thanks

The element does not come out of the top. According to Chevy's shop manual... "Wash filter element by slushing up and down in cleaning solvent"..."Dry filter unit with an air hose or let stand until dry"..."Fill body of cleaner with one pint of SAE 50 engine oil in summer and lighter in winter".

I used kerosene to clean mine. In lieu of engine oil, I use automatic transmission fluid. Also, even though the book says add a pint of oil to the body, it's better to add to the "oil level" mark, as all oil bath filters are not necessarily the same.

    Ken,

Thanks for all your help!! I have ordered a shop manual for my truck. Why do you use transmisision fluid in the filter? Are there benefits of using automatic trasnmision fluid over oil? Do oil bath filters work as well as a paper filters? Just getting started restoring my 59 Chevy truck.

    Thanks
