Have a 1955 2nd series 1/2 ton. Seat was in decent condition when did a frame off restoration over 4 years ago. Since then the material is beginning to fail. I need to do some minor clean-up and painting of frame before I re-upholster the seat. The springs look like they are painted with a gloss black paint. What paint do I paint the feet? They look like they are plain silvery metal. I would like any suggestions as this should make a nice winter project
I am beginning to work on my seat now also. (56'GMC) Maybe the GMC bench seat was different, I doubt it though, but the bottom of mine has a metal cover across the whole bottom of the seat. You cannot see any of the springs under the bench. I painted this metal piece and all other exposed parts gloss black like original. I have not decided what to do on the feet either though. I am afraid it would not look right if I paint them black.
I decided to paint the feet of my seat a metallic silver. It kind of hides minor imperfections without being too thick or "chromey" either.
I'm about to recover my seats as well and plan on painting the undersides black but the exposed frame and sidebar brown to match my interior. I have no plans to paint the springs. While we're on the seat subject, what have folks used for padding??? Larry 56 Stepside - Daily driver Carlisle, MA
All I know about the padding is they used high density foam. I would have liked to have gone by the upholstery shop to see things in process, but things did not work out. That guy was pretty fast.
