On my Dizzy there is a knob maybe half inch in diameter turns pretty easy and will eventually stop if turned in teh clockwise direction long enough I didnt see how far it would go in the other (didnt want it to fall off)? So just wondering what it is it is a Delco Remy Dizzy. Also why i was setting the timing i noticed due the lighting conditions that there was quite a bit of smoke coming form the crankcase breather tube I suppose that isa good thing meaning it is not clogged up but i am wondering how much smoke is to much smoke or how much is just right? Also this is maybe why the wife doesnt like to ride in the truck because it is like coming up throught the floor boards right into her seat? is there any remedy for this (other than driving alone) Bill
Your distributor should be well lubricated, you just turned the grease cup all the way in which means all the grease is now inside your dizzy. No harm done. Take completely off and put half a thimble of very thick cup grease into it and start back on a few threads until you feel a tad of resistance. Everytime you do a tune up or 10-15K miles give it a quarter turn. The owners manual gives more precise instructions I'm sure.
Oh yeah, about the wife, put a new seal on the battery box cover and make sure the two spring wires activated by turning the handle are there and moving into the locked position. You may have to make a PCV set up if the Mrs. nose is super sensitive. Check the archives for pics and info on this.
Thanks Thanks Evan Ill takea look at some of the other posts about sealing the box up there is no seal there now at all Bill
Bill ; Get some foam scraps fron behind the carpet store and glue them into the groove running 'round the perimiter of the battery box lid , then trim off the excess ~ it's a flimsy seal but works really well in fact . you should also seal up the edges of the tranny cover , same deal : foam glued to it before assembly , the tranny cover uses a fairly thick bit of foam. Then of course , replace the rubber mat with a nice inexpen$ive re-pop one to seal it a tiny bit better . Going over the tune up and getting everything ' Just So ' will reduce the breather smoke , you can also attach a hose to it and lay along the frame so it exhausts under the bed.... Do a few HOT oil & filter changes (hot as in " OH CRAP ! that oil burned my hand ! ") and as the accumulated sludge is cleaned out , the smoking should reduce . Driving the truck @ road speed for over 30 minutes will help clean out the carbon deposists on the piston crowns and again , reduce smoking .
The solutions & ideas that y'all come up with never cease to amaze me (ESPECIALLY the Brit). It is the most informative (and fun) place you can visit with clothes on! Glenn
We try We try our best, Nate an Ken dish out the facts and im just along for the ride, kinda like a crazy uncle
for the batter cover seal, and transmission cover seal, I just got a roll of foam strip seal at the local hardware store. I think it was like 2 or 3 bucks for 20 ft. but it works great, and it has the adhesive back so it stuck perfect. I think it was like 3/4 wide.
There's also a smaller seal where the shift lever pokes through the tranny cover , this is the thic one I was referring to , it must be 3" thick so it can compress as needed .
Sealing Etc Thanks for the ideas the PO had made a cover to replace the original tranny cover which hasa ring aroud the shifter that seals it pretty good Ill try to get a pic of it that and the rubber bot do a decent job there but teh battery box is a definate air leak i didnt think of i think ill stop by the big orange box store and buy some foam sealant there and try that first I also guess it is time to do an oil change on the ole girl since I dont know the history of it Ill drain it througha paint strainer see if any thing with part numbers come out ( I had this happen to me when working on a B25 WW2 bomber)
