Here's the setting: shop is empty because all the guys were going to the areas second largest swap meet--of which the threat from Ike completely killed it. I'm thinking about my 37 and rain and just happen to have a pile of solenoid valves from nitrous systems and various valves and switches from a/c and heater setups. Here's what I came up with; Put on-off solenoind valve in the vacuum line from the pump to the wiper motor. Run a 2nd line from the pump through a push button valve to the wiper motor and mounted the valve beside the dimmer switch. Now I can switch off the regular vacuum line and everytime I step on the button the wipers make a swipe. My left foot is no longer occupied with the automatic and there is no stretching over to the middle of the dash to crank the switch on and off. Lasly I'll prepare for what the Brit comes up with concerning boredom and an already fading mind.
A master! Here I am, fearing the worst for my Texas brethren, and you go and post a post like this! Thanks, Evan, I needed a laugh! Here, it's raining like a cow p#*%ing on a flat rock. No need for the occasional slap across the glass tonight. I can't wait to check into this vacuum assist that you wrote about. The rain just quit that quickly~
blades Is there any outlet available to up grade the wipper blades and arms to something a little stronger?
Just a thought If your using electric valves/actuators in the vacuum line, why not use an intermittent wiper relay to control it then you will only need the one valve. jus my 2 cents
British Bashing Joeseph P. Lucas : Inventor of the intermittant windshield Wiper said " A gentleman has no business Motoring about after dark " The Lucas three position switch : 1. Dim 2. Flicker 3. Off
Buy why ? . If you do periodic valve adjustments and add a check valve and a vacuum resivoir under the dash , they'll flip like mad , even in a Mid-West Gully Washer . You can always add a double action fuel pump as it has a vacuum pump on it... I posted the Airtex P/N a while ago , it costs under $50.00 brandy new . If you convert your truck to 12 volts , just buy a new 12 volt wiper motor . -Nate
Nate, I'm speaking about the wiper blades mostly. The truck is 12V. and also has the double fuel pmp the charged me 175.00 for the hose is not new up to the motor. I was going to get a bottle for them next, I have the 12v motor already. But Gater said his works just great after getting the unit redone. The replacement blades really move around a lot.
Vacuum Wipers O.K. Charles , here's the deal : The original vacuum motor didn;t have much power so the blades are kinda flimsy so there's not much drag ~ if you fit wiper arms from other 50's cars they'll bear down harder and stall the vacuum motor . NAPA's ' Classic Wiper ' has the correct blades that hold on fairly well . If you're going to a 12 volt motor , look for better (different) arms , they won't sail as much in cross winds and the motor will never notice the difference in drag . I don't know if you're aware that 99 % of all wiper arms are adjustable length ~ pull or push on the end part whilst firmly holding the fatter part and they'll slide , this way you can often score some 60's vintage Trico arms (good quality) and collapse them sufficiently to fit your truck.... I hope this helps .
Lucas!!!! Had a '72 MGB when I was a kid. Whenever I had electrical problems (ALWAYS), I used to reach under the dash and grab the biggest hunk of wiring harness I could get my hands on and give it a great big shaking. Usually solved the problem for at least a brief time. Referred to Lucas as the "Prince of Darkness". Can't tell you how many patch wires I used to bypass circuits that weren't working in that thing. There were extra wires everywhere. Andy
72 Not a good year for MG i think, im sure that was the era that Brittish Leyland were in ownership, they killed every marque they bought, Jags etc, it was the death knoll when BL bought out someone.
Lucas Electrics Actually ; Most of the Lucas designs are fine , it was the total lack of Quality Control thanx to the socialist unions , they're also what killed the British Motor Industry dead , NOT wretched design . If once takes the time to go over anything Lucas and fix poor solder joints and off spec. manufacturing , you'll have little or no troubles out of your various Lucas parts . I could go on at length as I happen to like LBC's a lot but the jerkoffs @ BMC worked assidiously at destroying the MG marque....
