working on a 58-62 235 ci, the front engine plate has a short (approx 1/2" long) copper tube sticking out of it. with small hole. looks like it is for oiling the timing gears. mine is bend up and kinda mangled. question, is there and special orentaion for these? can new replacements be purchased? anyone know anything about these?
Oiler The chevrolet part number is 3690722 it has a 1/8 hole and screws in . They are available thru www.obschevy.com for $10.95 plus shipping. Hope this helps
doesnt look like mine thanks, this part does not look like the one currently on the engine. one on engine is copper tubing , ant in not screwed into thin front engine plate but simply pinched and flared into non threaded hole. is this part ment to replace the stock tubing type? do i need to tap the front plate? existing there is just a machine cut channel in back of front plate that extends up near the front cam bearing, that how it gets its oil supply.. seems kinda rinkydink to me.
Oiler As best as I can tell you must have a 1963 235. GM made nozzle # 3875950 to fit 63 to 72 six cyl engines. The only info I have is that it is 1 7/32 ol. if it were mine I would make another one using the old one as a pattern. Aim it at the timing gear. It may be a hockey looking oiling system, but it works. Maybe someone else has a better plan to help you. Gene
Not sure I cant be 100% but im sure you have a similar set up to my old engine, its a small pinched tube that looks like it sprays a small amount of oil onto the timing gear. i think mine was brazed onto the plate.
Plate Unfortunately no i didnt replace it, the motor was just too worn out, even tho it was running! i swapped it out for a 56 chevy 4dr motor i picked up real cheap over here, but i have 3 spare engines now so if you get real stuck lol
NOT Rinky Dink It's a good engineering solution as the origial cam gears were made of fiber and so needed a goodly stream of oil pouring out onto the teeth at all times . These are high volume , low pressure oiling engines designed in the 1940's.... Sounds to me like you're heading in the right direction . Just for giggles post up the engine casting and serial numbers over on the Inliners Site , they'll tell you definitively what year is was produced as Generous Motors not only made 235's up to 1964 that I know of but also made many wierd ones for Military and industrial usages , some had strange details . as long as you install the oiler so it doesn't leak and is properly aimed , all will be fine .
