Has anyone ever heard of a "Fish" carb that was made back in the 50's? Saw one today. Single straight barrel with no moving parts except for the butterfly. It was running a 350 V-8 and is said to move 600 cfm.

Yup. I remember reading about them in the car mags in the 50's, but never saw one. as I recall they were touted as having incredible gas mileage and performance gains...much like snake oil in the 1800's. It was one of the things that "Detroit" and the oil companies supposedly bought-out to supress further production. Never have seen an actual road/dyno test of one. I suspect they were close cousins to the Linkert Crabs that we saw being used on Harleys nd dirt bikes in the 60's and early 70's. Those were "slide carbs" with no gas bowl, and actually spawned a more refined series of flat slide carbs in production motorcyles that I saw as a cross between the Linkert and the Mikuni/SU types. That's my 3 cents worth, and may be all hooey. I still see either butterfly carbs or EFI in all the car mags as the preferred applications.
