In addition to the other problems I have with the Factory Assembly Manual, far too often information is about 54 and 55.1 trucks. The front grill is one obvious one. The gas tank sending unit is another. The later models have a integral tube in the sending unit. I assume this tube siphons gas off the bottom of the tank and establishes the first connection to the gas line tubing.

Does anyone know where I can find assembly information about the 47-53 version of the sending unit? This model gas tank has a metal tube that comes off the bottom. I can't find any info on how the connection is made from the tank to the fuel line that runs along the chassis.

    Can anyone help here?

The 47 & 48 mount under the bed and the steel line threads right into a fitting on the front of the tank. The 49 up has a fitting that is through a hole in the cab floor under the center of the gas tank and from the factory had a petcock type valve that could turn the gas off but many of these are missing. Either way there is a 6" or so long flex hose that screws into the tank fitting and the line to the fuel pump screws into the other end of the flex hose. Our host and others sell this flex hose which is not a local parts store item anymore.

Thanks Evan. Just for clarification, you said the flex hose screws to the bottom of the tank. Does it reach all the way to the side rail of the chassis to meet the tube that runs to the fuel pump?

Origionally, yes. I have not seen any that have survived...not that they aren't out there. Most have been replaced by full tubing.

Classic Parts sells the sending unit and flex hose

Check out our host's catalog. They sell the sending unit, the gasket and retainer screws, as well as the flex hose that connects to the tank. Sending unit part #23-523, gasket #23-593, retainer screws #23-585, flex hose #23-457.

If you haven't done so already, order a copy of their catalog. It's one of the best I've seen. You'd be surprised at the detail and pictures of the parts in it. It will answer a lot of your questions and calm your concerns. Be forwarned though! Don't get too excited though and order a lot of repop parts! Nothing is better than salvaging original parts, if possible, because they just work better!

    original parts

Here, here on original parts. Just one example. Ordered a re-pop speedometer cable. It worked for about two seconds. Took my old, rusty one out of the "junk" box. Managed to get the cable out of the housing unharmed. About a pound of rust fell out of the housing. wiggled the frozen, rusty housing around a bit and another pound of rust fell out. Put it all back together and it works as new and hasn't given me a bit of a problem since.
