I relocated the tank to the rear of the bed some time ago and have since been pondering the best way to fill it. Most ether use a bed fill or fender fill setup which is fine, but I was wondering if anyone ever considered using the filler in the original location in the cab? I was thinking you could cut a hole in the cab below the spout and run a hose to the tank in the rear. Do you guys think this would work?

    Why not?

I think its a great idea. Its your truck, and there is no right or wrong way of doing a lot of things. Thats what makes this hobby great -- being able to do your own thing. Doug

I would reccommend making most of the pipe out of exhaust tubing. Get a shop to bend what you need, then make joints with filler hose. Double clamp everything. You may end up with a couple gallons of extra capacity. Make solid mounts wherever possible...this long a tube would be succeptible to vibrations.

You will need to have your vent tube as high as the filler or you would flow gas out of it. A second smaller tube run with the filler tube back up to just under the gas cap--just like the factory, would do it. It takes an hour to fill a tank with no vent tube if filling from a pump with an automatic click off trigger which they all now have.

    Caution

Word of caution, the cab is rubber mounted and moves about a bit, you will have to take this into account when making up a tube, and it will need quite a drop from the bottom of the cab to the tank or it will back up when filling because it isnt flowing fast enough!

Decided to give this one a try.
I only paid $29 for it but for some reason they have the same item listed for $49 in this auction. :headscratch:

Same one I used on my truck, but I mounted it on the back end of the left rear fender. I ditched the chain because I didn't want the cap to hang down and ding my paint. I mocked up the connection from the filler to the tank I mounted between the frame rails behind the rear end using 1/2" pvc pipe and then took the pvc to a local muffler shop. Had them bend a piece of stainless exhaust pipe to match the pvc. The shop owner is an old hot rod guy and only charged me $10.

Hey, that looks pretty good! I never thought about using it for the bed. I was going to mount it in the bed but you just gave me another option. What did you do about the vent tube?

The tank I put under the bed was from a 80-something Mitsubishi pickup. It had a separate vent line fitting that I attached a piece of 1/4" fuel line to. I used plastic locking ties to attach the vent line to the fill line all the way back to near the cap. Then I rigged a fuel filter to the end of the line to keep critters and splash out.

Using the rice-burner parts did nothing to increase mileage.

A motorcycle pop up cap fits so flush that when painted body color it's almost invisable. Since you just use your fingers to pop it up and unscrew it, it never gets scratched up like the ones that take a tool. Another option is to have the filler on the inside of the bed side, it keeps it off the floor and there is plenty of room inside the fender and behind the rear tire to run an out of sight filler tube down to the tank.

Hey, thanks for the pics. I like the idea of mounting it on the inside of the bed. If I'd thought about that earlier I could have used the stock filler neck back there!
