i have a 49 gmc 3/4 complete truck and a 47 1/2 ton with no suspension can i make the front axle into a six lug or even five
Another "g"!!! Sorry, Cory~ no information without a photo! I have a 52 G and I will be putting a 1/2 ton axle under it. (6 lugs) If you go with a disc brake conversion up front, you can then go to 5 lug. There is a LOT of good info about swapping the front end over to IFS by using one from a mid 70s to early 80s Chevy 1/2 ton. Bottom line~ you have options, we need pictures!
I have an axle from a 1950 3/4 ton that has a six lug hub on one side. It was bought to use for parts so I haven't checked out what the deal is. On the 1/2 ton for sure you can use the 53 or 54 car hubs to get a five lug pattern--5 on a 4 3/4 bolt circle.
Here you go! This is a 3/4 ton GMC (Greater Made Chevy) that has a '54 1/2 ton axle with the 6 lug stock pattern and 3/4 ton 2" drop leaf springs from Eaton Springs. Steering is all '54 chevy from the pitman arm to the drag link, and tie rod/ends. The steering box is the old 3/4's. Next comes the disc brake conversion for up front. The whole thing went together just like it was made that way. No slop in the u-bolts through the axle or around the springs. Perfectly snug! Yes, an IFS off of an late 70's 1/2 ton truck may have been cheaper, but the more I've dinked with this, the more if have found myself wanting to keep it as close to original as possible... ...plus, this was w-a-y to easy to do!
The front end of the 3/4 is the same as the 1/2 ton as far as width is concerned. Just make the swap. The rear frames are a bunch different.
