My stock rear is leaking from the front of the differential. I purchased a new rear pinion seal and started to install. Did not think it would be a big deal.... Anyway, I have pulled the driveshaft and center bolt, but now realize I do not have a clue what to do next..... Any help would be appreciated. Can I replace the seal externally, or will I have to the case open? Will I need any special tools? Randy
Its Been awhile Since I,ve Tore into the Rearend on one, So For Me a Pic Would be of Great Help. But Does the seal have A Flange on it That will Fit against the Front Housing Or Just fits inside the Lip ? If it Has the Lip, You Should be able to Get a Small Chisell & Slightly tap Between the seal & the Housing Going all the Way Around it till It Starts coming out , Once Out so Far You Should be Able to Pry it the Rest of the Way out , & Clean it out good & Replace By tapping around the edges with a Rubber Hammer till its tight against the Housing. Also I Would rap Some Ductape Around the Splines to Protect them. While Removing & Installing. If Its The one That Fits on the Inside I Punch a couple of Small Holes in Front of the Old seal with a Sharp punch , & Use A Small dent Puller With a Self tapping Screw in the end of it that Screws into the Punch Holes to Slowlly Remove it . Clean Then tap the New one back in . Once Again Depending on What You Have to Work With. I Have Severall Sizes of Brass Pipe I Use to install the Seals Evenlly that Slip over the Shaft & Drive it in till it Bottoms out in the housing. Hopefully someone thats done it More Resently Then Myself will Pop in With a better Idea or Say Wether this is the best way . Good Luck.
