Hey guys I found a used distributor in my garage it looks just like the one in my truck. which is a 235 and wanted to know if a 235 and a 216 distributor are the same I know my dad had a 41 chev pickup and it had a 216 in it so i think this is one he took off of his 216. thanks for any help
Dizzy Fun The same ? NO . Interchangable ? oh , Lordy ~ YES INDEEDY ! The '41 ~ '46 dizzy has two terminals for the coil wire as those all had a current reversing switch connected to the starter pedal , it caused even wear on the contact points and was soon dropped as Delco was in danger of never selling replacement ignition points ever again.... Breaker Point & Ign. timing is the same on every InLine 6 Banger GM ever made (including the wretched Pontiac OHC) : Points to .016" or 33° dwell and ball on pointer @ 600 RPM idle speed or (better yet) use the triangle mark (TDC mark) to set the all-in ignition timing to 30° ~ 32° all in @ 3,000 RPM's .
Used Dizzy Remember to always use a dwell meter when setting the points gap , if the dwelvaries by more that 3° when revving the engine it's time to try the other dizzy or sent it out for re-bushing . Remember : a .001" change in the points gap changes the ignition timing by 3° and that's a lot . Always drop two or three drops of engine oil down the dizzy's center shaft after removing the rotor , do this once a month or so regasrdless of milage ad it lubricsts the advance mechanism , very important for good power and throttle response .
Steel or Iron Gear/Cam This site has info about the distributor gear. Steel or Iron? http://www.inliners.org/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=42916&PHPSESSID=afc4937264c8a49c2097b59417542a13 Online Quotes: It is said that.... a good machinist can identify the gears by the machining marks. And, when struck, the steel cam has a ring, and the iron cam a "thunk".
Interesting As Chevy has always used Cast iron camshafts and steel gears like every other vehicle manufacturer on Earth , with no troubles . However , if Tom says there can be problems , I'd listen . both steel and cast iron go ' thunk 'if they're swadjed tightly into place , that dampens the ring . Looks like you alls are teaching me again .
