Awhile back I started a post on a homemade fan shroud that I made. The shroud works fine, but I don't think the fan is strong enough. I've heard alot of talk about the use of the Mark VIII fan which produces over 4000 cfms so I bought one off Ebay. I also found a new reverse rotation flex fan real cheap ($4.00) so I got it just in case. This leads me to my question, what are you using, a mechanical fan or electric? I also posed this question but got few replies: Is there a junkyard radiator that works well in the AD's?
I am using an electric. At first it was due to clearance but I am finding a lot of people are doing it because it will keep it cool when stuck in traffic or idling as well as the cooling gains. I would like to get a quieter fan as mine I can hear while driving. That may be something you will want to look into is a quieter fan.
Plain old radiator Robert~ A plain old original radiator has more than enough circulation to keep a V-Nate cool. A fan on top of that should be more than enough. If your temp is too high, I'd have to ask what # thermostat you had. (I'm sure you put in the right one, so... ) Get it figured out, because I want more cruising stories!
I'm using an electric fan, it's one off of an older chrysler car(I think anyway), but I'm not sure what model it came off of, because I got it with a radiator I bought for my truck. It's only about 12 or 13 inches in diameter, but I can stand in front of my truck about a foot or so away, and I can feel it sucking air, and seems to do the job of cooling my SB.
I put in the one that was stock issue for the TPI Camaro. Can't remember whether or not it was a 180 or not. The problem I'm having is that the current fan I have is just not pulling enough air. This is a 4000cfm unit I just got yesterday. I think it should do the job with no problems.
Cooling The Camaro radiator is only two rows in the core , insufficient for your needs . The original radiator will keep a Caddy 425 V-ate engine with AC cool in Death Valley in summer... Get the biggest electric fan you can fit so it covers more surface area and mount it up high as the upper part of the core is the hottest . Use a relay and wire it live so it can come on after you've parked and locked up the truck , that's when it " heat soaks " and will boil . If you have one fan , adding another will screw up the airflow and cause overheating ~ choose one and stick with it . Do it once , do it right and foregedabout it .
Oh, I'm still using the original radiator. I was referring to the Camaro thermostat in the previous post.
Camaro Thermostat It'll be at least a 187° F one then , kinda marginal maybe . I use a 185° one in my '49 and the engine runs very well but has overheated (boiled over) in dense stopped traffic in summer , once .
Well I installed this one this weekend and believe you me, this one works great! When you compare it to the old one there is no comparison. I had to cut out about an inch to get a good fit. It's tight in the engine bay but works quite well. I drove it around town and it keep things nice and cool.
I got it off Ebay, made an offer of $35 and the seller took it. Not too loud at all. Here's another from a different seller. He's asking more for it than my seller was but he'll take offers.
glad to see that you got this problem solved. theres nothing more rewarding then getting something taken care of like that
Proper E-Fans Good deal ! . the first one you used , was Waayyyyyy to small . I have a nice pusher typ E-fan and yes , they're fairly noisy if they'removing a lot of air . That one you have looks really good to me . I just used the biggest one I could find , it's off a Mobil M1-D sweeper......
