Well i rebuilt the top end in my 86 305 just to see that i have a bad cam shaft... So would i just be best off putting a 350 in it or just rebuild the 305 that i have now?? I could use some good advice. And another problem i may run into is the truck was origanlly a v6 but was replaced with the 305 about 8 years ago so if i went to the 350 would the 4.3 rear end gears cause a problem??????????? thanks, mr.bigbock
It depended what you want the truck for most of the time. Also what you want the truck for mean power, or to get around save a few bucks in fuel, a slight upgrade to the cam would give you some power better fuel. As to the what are you saying the rear gear is a 4.30 set up. the diff is going to be 10 bolt un less some has replaced it. What gear in ? Now if your building for power and it got a gear higher than 3.73 it will pull hard, if your building to save some fuel 3.73 and up will hurt. 305 where bad for "cams lifter", valves seals & guides more so it bad oil changes to long between them. How good is the motor take a compression test. Then sit down think what you want.
Well the mechanic that worked on this truck many years ago is actually my mahs boyfriends brother lol and about 10 years ago it had A V6 in it and it blew up some place down state and they brought it back and put the 5.0 in it. and never changed the gears. so its still the same. but my problem is if i put a 350 in the truck will i HAVE to change the gears? but im sure eveuntually they will get to sqwauking and eventually blow?? and how much more power does a 350 have over a 305? because i know its only an 8th of an inch difference in the cylinder heads but that adds up. and i just want to make a monster of a toy for a truck. i want power because i have a neon so im not in much of a hurry yet. And i also need something that will haul a camper on occassions. So i think the 350 is the way to go!!!!!!!
My C10 originally came with a 4.3/700r4 and 3.08s. 3.08s aren't great for acceleration/power, but they get pretty good fuel economy. If you're going to haul a camper you will probably want to upgrade to the 350 and get 3.73s or 4.10s for the rear.
Well Big Block, I agree with 76 it all depends what you want to do with the truck and your budget. It looks like a good truck to rework. You have a lot of options out there. I have the 305 and it still runs good. There is the option of the crate motor. They have a choice of HP. You can rework the 305 and it will still be a 305 .The 350 is the motor of my choice, with a good auto .You have many transmissions builder options. Do the research You decide what you want!
I had a 85 that had a 305 in it and when I went to rebuild it I put a small street cam in it with an edlebrock intake and carb, plus I added headers and that gave me power when I wanted it and I could tow my boat. I kept the rearend as it was{same as yours}....I wanted some power but, I also used it as a daily driver. Like everyone else said do some research and see what is in your budget. good luck and have fun.
Well will the 305 haul a camper with ease or will it just eat its self up?? i think its a 40 footer a zeplin? But ho much more power would a 350 have over the 305? thats my main question. this is my first v8 so im kinda curious, well hell its my first carburated. But im going to do what i can with it and see how she goes. I thought about putting in a 3/4 cam but i heard it idles lik s*** and jerks and kicks at low rpm. So i may just get a voodoo. Or any suggestions???
okay is it a half ton? pulling a 40ft trailer might be a little much if you have a good 350 then yeah put it in the truck, but even tthen that will be alot of weight on the truck. jmo. even with the right cam and intake, carb and headers this will give you power but, I am more worried about the weight. the cam I have is 308/318 duration, plenty of power and sounds good. best of luck.
Well 305 can be built up to around 390 - 405 hp but can't find the write up's on the builds. The 350 can be built up to 500 hp about. but these are more of a race motor. But your 305 at most would be 160 -180 hp for a 305. very easy to bring that up to 275 hp feel strong. small list of better parts lighter parts.
