    In Whitebull's thread you mentioned

"6 volts is no problem unless you want a modern radio , you can always slap on a Pontiac or Cadillac 6 volt generator as they charge better and higher output for nice bright 6 volt headlights and easy sub zero starting too ."

I'm interested, but needed more info

Beside a junkyard, does anyone sell them rebuilt?

What years of Pontiac or Cadillic?

    Installation
Use original pulley on the generator or swap out the one on the 49 now?
A dream here, do it match up with the mounting bracket on the 49?

And anything else I should know

    Thanks
    Jim

    High Output 6 Volt Gennie

I'd think a 1954 Pontiac or Cadillac gennie would work fine .

The mounts _should_ fit but if not , shims are simple , I use flat washers...

The '49s wide pulley should slip right on .

Try it with your current voltage regulator , if no joy then you can buy another one , also for the '54 Pontiac .

FWIW , if you're carefull and remember to disconnect the ground cable first , you can clean the contact points in any voltage regulator by dragging some LINT FREE paper through them untill the black stuff stops marking the paper . DO NOT touch the springs etc. inside the voltage regulator in any way that might possibly change the oh so delicate adjust ments !

What you do is : take the brandy new business card and place it between the points then gently close the points by lightly pressing with one fingertip on the backside of the actual point , draw the card out and observe the tell tale black smoot , repeat as necessary (usually two or three times) until the card comes out clean .

DO NOT use a card out of your wallet ! go get some new ones , white paper naturally .

I am hesitant to explain how to adjust the charge rate as it's easy to $moke the gennie .

Remember to put one or two drops of engine oil in the oiler once a month , no more . I like to do it with the engine idling .

I think I am going out to oil mine now, Thanks. By the way, I had my 6 volt re-wired to a 12 volt by an Auto-electric shop here in Nashville (wonderful job) and when I mounted the generator on my 1960 235 I modified the slotted bracket (removed the offset) so it would line-up with the belt and pulleys while using the original attachment brkt. I am turning a short shaft water pump, and All are working well together.
    Cheers,
    Terry

    Generator Oiling

    Good deal ! .

Just remember : only a drop or two , more and it'll wind up on the commutator and cause poor charging and rapid brush wear .
