Velocity, not the drug. I have always worshipped speed, not racing another car but just the sensation itself. Now halfway through the seventh decade of life my eyesight, reaction time, and strength are all starting to fade which dictates that one cannot do something that could endanger others. Even in Texas it is getting hard to do a two mile run without having to drive for hours to the west. The really tough part is that there are some genuine fast, fast cars now. I have friends that have a Viper with the venom kit (750hp), a Z06 Vette, a GT 40 Ford and a relatively slow (185mph) Ferrari. I have had them all at or near 200mph---unheard of just a few years back. There are several regular cars that are pretty darn fierce if someone is sharp enough to get around the limiter. The Charger and Marauder come to mind. I have found new homes for my personal toys like the 400 sbc MG, the 400 sbc Luv, the 406 sbc Fiero, and the 388 sbc mid-engined 66 Corvair. All these had been spoken for for years so it just took a phone call which was much better than a long drawn out process. There is a really great movie called "The Worlds Fastest Indian" that both men and women really like and it exposes this fascination with speed. Next time you rent a movie give it a view---you won't be disappointed and it sheds light on this affliction.
Great movie! I agree, Evan. This is one of those movies you might just as well buy. Almost up to 200 mph? I remember getting my mustang up to 100+ one night. I was on a straight road out in the country. I found out that my lights had an electrical problem when I hit a bump in the road and they went out on me. Hit another bump and they came back on. I took it as God's way of saying, "Stick to the speed limit, Paul."
I'm Sorry Evan As I know how important it is , same thing with me and Motos , I cannot currently ride . Just think of all the people you've introduced to the joys of proper high speed vehicle operation over the years...... We are very lucky to have you here on this forum .
Wow, reading that made me miss my 04 Lighting I sold just over a year ago. A step son I had a one time use to deal with the high end euro cars, he would drive some home and twick them a little before they were shipped off. He had a twin turbo Black Testarossa would hit that little mark, I only took it up to 180. Thanks for the thoughts.
I have come to appreciate true speed not as being how fast you are going, but how far you push your vehicle to being out of control. Circle track racing taught me that it doesn't matter what your speed is, the true test is pushing yourself and your vehicle until you actually recognize that you are truly no longer in complete control...physics have been stretched to the max and the slightest nudge can propel you into a wicked wreck. I have done many things in life and have had friends who have tried most extreme adrenaline rush gimmicks like bungy jumping, sky diving, etc. Others have done almost every illegal narcotic available to man, but all agree that there is nothing that can compare to the rush of high speed motorsports. Yeah, speed...it's the greatest addiction in the world.
