I saw on another post very knowledgable answers on speakers. There is mention of 6x9 and 10 inch units. Admittedly I am a complete neanderthal on this subject but I would like to know how the late model cars get by with the tiny speakers they use. My wifes Infinity has several no bigger than a silver dollar and two in the top of the dash the size of a nickel. It may have what they call a "Bose" system but it sounds good for the few nano seconds it is left on when I get in her car. Curiosity is prodding me as to why old cars need big speakers and new ones use small ones.

    speaker technic

All newer Cars use normally a hidden bass booster and a buffered energy station (it's a condensator with a lot of power for peaks in your sound). Therefore the sound speaker are so small. The next Improvement is the room around/behind the speaker. the room and the position of speaker are optimized for driver position (only for sound system w/o sound computer) and the noise reduction inside a newer car is better than in an older car. iinstalled a bose sound system in my Cadillac from 1957 (very expensive but it's my dream) with all sound computers are available :D...and the sound is better than in my new Mercedes.
If you buy a original sound system from a new car you have to pay a lot of money. Put these components in an older car and the sound is the same. Owner use normally simple radio, less expensive speakers and hope the sound is perfect. I remember about follow sentence: the sound and loudness is depend on the surface of the speaker. Not the power of the amplifier is important.
See behind an old radio. It has 1 watt of output and a big speaker, today you have 100 watt output an a small speaker but the loudness is the same. Thats the trick of the newer technic. And the last one: an old tube amplifier sound always better than a new high tech amplifier. Really! i have build an old tube system for my home sound and i know what i do. i learned it as i was young:)

Try following: the bass sound is not to located. put the bass speaker from your home system to some different places - the sound is the same.

    What Volker said ! .

Plus : the quality of modern speakers to produce better quality of sound , across a wider frequency range , is much better , the old tech speakers were cheaply made , even by the standards of the day .

Remember to always match the impedance ! .

An enclosure behind any speaker will make a huge difference....cup your old walkman speaker in your hand and hear the difference. Modern equipment, sound deadening, and design make a huge diference.

Thanks all. Volker I wished you weren't all the way across the big pond. If you were near my shop we would put a 235 in place of your old 216 and make it look factory in 2 days---guaranteed. You could spend that time standing on your head under the dash of about four rides that the owners want maxed out with sound goodies. I'd call it even and furnish the engine.

    hmmm

Thanks for your offer, Evan. I think about how can i ship my truck to your shop:D
but the way is too long, gas too expensive and my truck can't swim above the ocean. The only reason that's impossible - i can't find a gas station on the ocean . Therefore it's a dream.

To remember: I'm looking for an 235 or 261 to rebuild. (running engine prefered). If anybody hear from an engine to buy, please let me know.
