Anybody know of the best transmission swap to replace the 3 speed manual on a 235? It looks like a S10 may work but which one:confused:

I think the Camaro and S10 T5's are used alot. We put one in a 52 and just picked the one with the shifter the furtherest forward. Many have the shifter at the rear and would require bucket seats for clearence. You have to shorten the pilot, cut the splines back about 1/2", and use the T5 clutch plate. The 3sp with the Borgwarner OD is a direct replacement for the existing 3sp, even uses the same length driveshaft. Give you six forward speeds if you want to use OD in each of the forward gears. The best T5 gives a 22% OD while the Borgwarner gives 30%. A 30% OD gives a 2.88 final when used with a 4.11 rear end.

    Thanks Evan
Your advise is greatly appreciated & respected. This truck is a project for my 16-yr old son who has discovered the joy of the stick shift. I was in hope of a eazy & cheap weekend project. The T5 looks like ~1,000 labor at a transmission shop plus the parts.

There are some good write-ups on the stove bolt page for the T-5 swap. Look in tech tips. Chris www.stovebolt.com

I am very interested in this thread.

You may recall I am in the planning stage to put in a 65-67 Chevelle Saginaw/BG OD unit into my 53'.

I feel that I can have all the benefits of the 4:11 rear end with a final drive of 2:88. I just got a really nice Hurst Master Shift on Ebay for a Saginaw for $35.00. It will need minimal modification to the brackets to fit the BG OD unit.

Coilover's concern about rear clearance and needing bucket seats is a new thought for me. Does anyone know if I can buy just the long truck shifter lever to bolt on to my Shifter set-up?

    Thanks, Flashlight

That's a great point, Patrick's told me the same thing. That it would be easiet to get around the solinoid.

The previous owner took out the column shift. Although I have one laying around in a box somewhere.

    Thanks, Flashlight
