Does anyone know of a good substitute for the 3689009 Sealing Compound called out in the Assembly Manual?

Was the original an RTV , a butyl rubber or some other kind of sealant?

    Thanks all.

For sure not an RTV, these sealants are off shoots from the space program and not around then. Butyl rubber and latex type were available. Parts stores maybe and auto paint supply stores for sure have a number of different seam sealers. There are brushable types in quart cans, caulking tubes, and squeeze tubes. The long spot welded seams used the brush on type and the other joints used what appear to be caulking. For some joints dum dum (strip caulk) closely matches the factory material. I like nearly all 3M products but their "Fast and Firm" joint sealer gets hard and cracks. Look for "paintable" on the container if used in an area to be painted.

Is there a good one out there?

I bought some "Fast and Firm" just before this post came out, but planning on returning it. I need some in either a squeeze tube or caulking tube, paintable. Anyone got suggestions on a specific brand?

    Thanks for any help,
    Bob

    Bob,

I ended up finding a 3M product called "Ultrapro Autobody Sealant". It is Part No. 051135-08301. It comes in a few different colors, but you can paint over it so it should not matter.

I found it at my Auto Paint store in a squeeze tube.

Most auto supply stores carry seam sealer. It is in a caulk tube, nd is the stuff used in new pickup truck beds. It is paintable, and stays somewhat flexible. Works well for most aplications.
