Ok guys, give the mechanically challenged some help here. I am doing a frame off with a little mild hot rod flare. I have a fresh 305 (stock rebuild)(the price was right...free w/a 4 barrel intake) with stock heads, a Edelbrock performer 600 carb, MSD electronic ignition and some Hedman block hugger headers, and of course all the chrome trimmings. I am not interested in mega horsepower. Just something nice to drive. I installed new standard stamped rockers along with new pushrods and lifters. When I installed the harmonic balancer and adjusted the valves, I set the timing mark on "0" and #1 piston was on TDC. I installed my MSD distributor with #1 pointing forward with the rotor on the leading edge of the #1 contact. When I started the engine, it ran like doo-doo, I advanced the distributor until it was running smooth (darn fine actually) but now the timing mark is about 30 degrees off. It shows I am firing about 30 degrees early. What did I do wrong? Could my distributor be off a tooth? Any suggestions guys would be appreciated.
