I rolled my side glass up when I got home today and found it was busted. :( Now I need to know how to get the old one out and put the new one in. Please help I have any idea how to do this. Do you have to take the vent window out ??? Or can it be done easier than that.

Breezy, you'll find that it will be easier if you take the wing window out. Do you have a copy of the shop manual? It gives a very detailed explanation of how to do it. If you don't, go to Keith's website, as he has an online copy of it.

P.S. Don't buy a replacement glass from the numerous vendors who claim to have them. Simply take your glass down to your local glass place and they will make you one that will work perfectly!

You will need to take the 2 or 3 screws out that hold the vent frame to the door frame (usually phillips head) plus the one or two that are at the base of the divider post (usually clutch head) and finally a hidden 5/16th hex bolt that takes a 1/2" socket. You remove the access panel on the inside of the door and by reaching eight or ten inches up through this hole to the very bottom of the divider bar you can feel the head of this bolt. It is usually not seized up. A benefit of then completely removing the vent assembly is you can slide the window channel off the rollers without removing the regulator. The other way is to take the screws out that hold the regulator so the rollers will clear the channel. You can then turn the window 90 degrees by moving the divider bar towards the front of the door at the bottom so the glass clears the felt channel. Window removal on an AD is about a ten minute job if you have a hangover and the lighting is bad.

Thanks Evan. I found a link I had for the manual. It said nothing about that 5/16 bolt yet, but I have been flipping back and forth to here. Looks like the vent window will be coming out. Good thing is this has all been out and redone not to long ago. Not by me. I just wonder why it broke in the first place. It is kinda hard to roll down. Gets stuck about half way and I have to push the front down to go the rest of the way. Is there any adjustment to make this easier?? I had to fix the rear support last week it had broke from the channel ,so I welded it back and put it back in. ANyboby have simular problems. All new glass and felts. I'm not sure what happen, broke while down.

Thanks Ken, That's the same link I had. Just forgot about it. Hope that never goes away. The manual they had at classic chevy was not like this. So I didn't buy it. I was in KC 2 weeks ago and dropped about 6 bills there. Wish I had picked up a side glass. HA HA . I think the local glass shop cuts laminated glass. Hopefully I'll hav this figured out in the coming week. Anybody have a template??

Boy do I have to eat some humble pie. That 5/16 bolt advice is really great if it was a 55-59 TF truck. The AD lower bracket is held by a screw through the inner door panel into the bracket at the bottom of the divider bar. Just to make sure I checked my AD/TF door rack and realized senility had scrambled a few brain cells. The push button doors are in the middle but if the manual doesn't have a clear picture I can snap one tomorrow. By count I only see 9 AD's and 10 TF's on the rack.

    Hi Breezy
I replaced my passenger side glass in close to a hour. I used RTV to glue the window to the metal. The reason it took so long was I glued it backwards and had to knock it aloose from the metal and re-glue it. I know you are supposed to use cork or something like that but I did not want to beat on the new glass. I think Classic charged $28 for the glass. If you have clear glass it would be a good time to change to tinted in both doors. If you dont have to replace whisker strips & stuff its abont as hard as changing a valve gasket

Well I stopped at a glass shop this morning. He actually is putting a gmc together and said he had a new glass, but couldn't find it. Then he called an hour latter to say it was there. Took mine all apart at the shop. Drove over there to find out I have green tinted glass and his is clear.Crap!! He had the other glass shop in town cut it for him. It looks horrible and it was a 1/4 inch narrower than mine. Guess it wouldn't bind up that way? Anyhow I'm going to order a new glass from somewhere to match mine.

    Evan,

I thought I would post this to ease your mind.A 55.1 AD has the 5/16 bolt at the bottom of the divider bar.I just did mine.Don't know if they used the same vent glass in the TF.Possibly?
