ok just replace my rochestor b with carter YF, 216 engine.
runs and starts great.. but i cant make it around the block. when engine gets hot and i take off down the road the carb boils over.. gas driiping all over the place.. truck dies.. if stop let it sit for 20 min or so starts up and runs for another 10 minutes or so then same thing..

if i let it idle in my drive way.. it will run for ever no boil over...

    whats the deal.. any ideas?

Check to see if the exhaust heater to the manifold flap is working. There is a weight that is a half circle sticking out of the exhaust manifold, on the other side is a wound spring. It is supposed to heat the incoming air, then close when proper heat is reached. The 53 I have been working on had this issue, and would vapor lock. Soak it with kroil or PB Blaster and make shure it works freely.

the manifold flap is working fine.. wondering if it has something to do with the heat of engine.. it does have the thermal break fitting where it bolts to manifold...

    Carby Spewing

Are you certain there's not more than 3.5 PSI fuel pressure ?.

The same fault in two different carbys makes me suspicious.....

    nate,
uh no not certain, never have replace the fuel pump.. same pump i have had for 18 yrs.... why would fuel pressure be high? would have to be the fuel pump correct? could go buy a new one... and see.

I agree the boil over has happen on several carbs... makes me suspisuos too..
espsually when i change from roch bs to the carter YF..

but i am at a loss for cause.

    Well I'm not sure ;

You're having overflowing troubles but have never mentioned a hot running engine so I'm thinking it's either a tiny bit of spooge in the float valve or maybe too much fuel pressure (not likely with an 18 YO one tho') .

Does this truck have a paper element fuel filter at the cary inlet ? if not , add one right away as I went through this same issue many years ago when on a road trip and all it was , was some fine silt in the fuel I bought 250 miles from home in the middle of summer....

ok gave up on the yf... it just lecks gas all over.. don't know why, pulled it apart many times.. just dont know. (repbuilt total cost 150 bucks or so.)

Put rochestor b back on.. it leaked drpping gas out bottom like crazy.. pulled it apart.. found fluid in float.. changed float with another used float i had. worked for awhile.. then started dripping out bottom again.. not as bad.. whatever put it away as well. (rebuilt total cost 180 bucks or so)

pulled out a old w1 i had sitting around. my shop. no nothing about this carb bought on line for the core.. (for like 20 bucks.) but looked clean. shove it on truck what the heck couldnt work worse than the others.. truck started right up.. been driving it for a couple days now NO problem.. CRAZY!!

Nate. yes i have always had fuel filter in line.. since the truck was now running good. i just now bought a period in line glass bowl filter element, painted that W1, went an bought all new fuel, and vacumm tubing and reinstalled the whole system, nice neat and preatty..

Yahoo i have a runner again.. hope it sticks.. LOL

not crazy about the W1 has it does not have the throdle advance with coke like R-B's and C-YF.. but i will live with it if it make the truck run.. LOL

    Rochester Carby Floats

Are still available from NAPA stores in the " TOMCO " line , the good news is , they're still BRASS ! :)

Take a look at the float valve in the Rochester 'B' carby , sometimes they come with a back tip , this is ' Viton ' and was a great thing when introduced many yers ago but the modern Foo-Foo " Motor Fuel " we get these days is NOT Gasoline and occasionally attacks the tips and soften them up ,you'll see a depression if it's bad , this is also caused by pressing the floats to adjust them rather than using the needle nosed pliers like you're suposed to ~ the Viton tip isn't designed to handle ANY pressure , just be closed or open by the float so it's often ruined accidentally when servicing the carby .

Also , ensure the ring gasket under the floats valves base is intact and fibre , not metal and that the base is firmly screwed in , they loosen up over time too .

The fact that the old Carter W-1 carby isn't leaking proves my earlier point ~

You're not having a boil overproblem , just a carby problem , get back to it after the wedding .
