[updated:LAST EDITED ON May-24-02 AT 01:04 AM (CST)]Hey guys, another question. I REALLY do need to replace my rocker panels and floor panels. You guys that have done this before is it pretty easy to do if you have a torch welder and some oxycetelne. What works best to cut the old rusty juck out. and the panels that you (Chevy Duty) carry , do they come with instruction or any kind of template?
Hey Mike, I'm in the middle of doing that myself at the moment. Since my truck is sitting inside my garage I'm a bit shy about using a torch. I used a die grinder with a cutoff wheel to get most of the rocker panel off and then just drilled out the spot welds and it came off real easy and real clean. As far as the floor panels go, I found it easier to cut away the rusted area and make smaller patch panels from the new floor panels. Kind of have to do this anyway since no one makes the piece that the tranny hump cover bolts to (had to go to the salvage yard for that.) The February 2000 issue of Classic Trucks has an article on replacing rocker panels and cab corners for 60-66 trucks that was great. 866-601-5199 is the number to order a back issue from. I asked a similar question a while back and Butchstop60 suggested replacing the rocker panel first and then doing the floors. After getting into it and seeing how everything goes together, I would have to say it was the best advice I've had in a while. I welded my bits and pieces back together with a MIG unit and did okay. I was kind of surprised since I'm not a great welder. Good luck.
