How can I tell if the engine is a 216 or a 235 from looking at the engine only?

Four bolts hold the rocker box cover on for a 235, two located on each side. Two bolts hold the rocker box cover on for a 216 located on the top.

216 side cover goes all the way around spark plugs, has 2 bolt valve cover and high mount wter pump.
235 side cover stops before spark plugs, has 4 bolt rocker cover, and after 54-55 has a lower water pump.

Check the serial # in front of dist. against #s on Patrick's site.

All years (37-53): 216 side cover goes all the way around spark plugs, has 2 bolt valve cover and high mount water pump.

1941-1953: 235 side cover goes all the way around spark plugs, has 2 bolt valve cover and high mount water pump.

1950-1962: 235 side cover stops before spark plugs

1954-1962/1963: 235/261 has 4 bolt valve/ cover, and after 55-1st series has a lower water pump.

There were different styles of 4-bolt valve covers between 45-63.

The easiest way to tell if you have a low-pressure 216/235 (1953 and earlier) is to look for the small triangular-like cover on the lower-middle of the block on the manifold side (this oil distributor is only used on the low-pressure engines).

The only easy way you can tell a pre-53 216 from a pre-53 235 is via casting codes and engine serial numbers.
