Original Engine?

I have just purchased a 1964 SWB Stepside to restore. The original inline six was tossed some time ago and a 350 was put in. My question is how can I find out what was the original engine the truck came with? Any information would be helpful.

I beleive its going to be either a 216 cu in or a 235 cu in

 

The VIN matches the title 4C144N1XXXXX. The plate on the driver kick panel is difficult to read but is stamped 5000 as the GVW. It also stamped STD which I guess to be a standard transmission. Right below that is stamped 507AA and the wheel base is stamped 115. What does the 507AA mean?

BTW What is the SPID and I have not found the build sheet.

 

The 235 last year was 1962 your engine would have been either a 292 or a 230 cu. in.

 

OK So with the information posted above is there any way to know for certain if it is a 230 or a 292? Once I find out it want to buy / trade a 350 fan to bell housing including 4 brl holley and exhaust for a complete running replacement.

if the tag is still there on the drivers kick panel it might say what it had but my guess is the 250 il6

 

The Kick Pad plate info is in post # 4. Everything that my limited knowlege and research has come up with is the 250 didn't start untill after 1964. The 235 had stopped by 1962. The guy I got the truck from stated the original motor was a Il6. Anybody out there than can decode the kick plate info?

 

I think that plate on the kick panel will give you the h.p. which could be converted.
Joe wsa correct in that it would be a 230 or 292. More than likely the 230.

 

The 250 was first used in the 66 truck year....but that doesn't mean someone didn't put one in along the way. The 507AA is the paint code.

You couldn't tell any difference in the 250 or 230 externally. The 292 is a taller motor and the sidecovers are about 3" taller. You would be real safe putting a 230 in. The id numbers for hte engines were stamped on a flat pad just behind the distributor. There are a BUNCH of numbers for 250 and 230's.

If I understand your original question to be what could you put in it that would be close to original, I would look for a 230. Again, only an expert could tell the difference. I have had both in the 66 I own.

 

Many thanks for the info. Since I have someone who is willing to give me a complete 250, I hope, that is what I will put into my 64. Also the paint code is just information since I play Santa during the Holidays I plan on painting it Red with a White Top and calling it "Santa's Toy".
