1986 1/2 ton, short box, 4 X 4. Installed rebuilt 700 R about 2000 miles ago. Driving along, for now apparant reason, simply quits working. No slipping before, all gears were working, now nothing no way no how. Like it is in neutral all the time. Checked out the transfer case, and it is OK. Any ideas of what I should be looking for would be helpful. Thanks.

Check the TV cable and make sure it is connected to the carburetor linkage.

The TV cable could be broken, see if you can pull the cable out of the sheath.

If all that looks ok, disconnect the cable from the carburetor linkage and exercise the plunger that’s connected to the other end of the cable down in the transmission by pulling the cable out as far as it will go and then letting it go back in (with the truck not running). Do this 15 or 20 times and then reconnect the cable and readjust it correctly. It is imperative the TV cable be adjusted correctly; if it’s not adjusted correctly you WILL destroy the transmission. This web site has instructions on how to adjust the cable correctly.

If you want to know more about how the TV (Throttle Valve Cable) system in this transmission works, check out this article.

    Hope this helps,
