I'm sure someone knows what to do with these fittings when they come off the end of the line. (?) I have a total of three that the lines popped out. (Okay, they slowly came out as I tightened the fitting.) What to do, what to do... *Sorry about the second picture, it's the tiny line that goes into my oil gauge. Same problem...
Take the line and the fitting down to the auto parts store and tell them you need a "Farrel" cut the line back to a fresh piece, usually about 1/2" then slide the fitting on to the line then the Farrel then screw it back together. Just make sure that before you start tightening the fitting that you bottom out the line in the fitting, those are compression fittings and once they are tight the Farrel's are locked on for good.....Big Tim
Thanks, Big Tim I knew about the "wedding band" type of ferrel, but not ones that fit on this type of fitting. I can see where something clamped down hard enough to create a slight ring around the line, and the fitting didn't seem to want to come off past that~ That is until I tried putting it back in the fitting it went into. Then miraculously, the line worked it's way right out of the part I was putting in. It makes me wonder if I should replace all of them.
Compression Fittings This isn't a Ferrule typ , it's a compression typ and you need to replace the pipe as it's died from too many years of service . If you can find a FLAPS with a good selection of Weatherhead drawers , root through until you find new barrels and replace those too . I'd think mahybe InLine Tube would sell these lines pre bent and with the correct fitting on them , affordably , they seem to sell everything else in old engine tubing .
Aren't we talking about the same thing? Don't you have to have a ferrule to make the compression fitting work? Unless its flexible tubing then you need an insert too. Doesn't the compression fitting compress the ferrule around the tubing locking it on to the tubing forever and ever and ever and ever and ever (well you get my point) thus the name, The Compression Fitting? Or did I just make a mistake by calling the barrel a ferrule instead? I need to know, can you go in to more detail please?......Big Tim
Napa My FLAPS had a case full of these in all different sizes. All three that I needed. These particular fittings are half nut/half ferrule. As BT said, push the line in until it hits its stopping point, and screw the fitting in. When you tighten it, the end is forced down into the tubing. Mark that job off my list of things to do. Tomorrow~ install radiator!
These compression fittings don't need the slip on ferrule ~ they're an older typ that in the 1920's were called " FORD Fittings " . Both are types of compression fittings I'd guess but this nut doesn't need the slip on ring ferrule . Sorry I can't be more helpful , I depend on your guys for much of the details .
It was sooooo much fun to get up under the dash and reconnect the oil line to the back of the oil gauge! Gosh, I've missed those days. Thankfully, I still get to work on replacing dash bulbs for 12 volt, and taking care of all that other 6 volt stuff that needs to be protected... Whupeeeee~
Zig its so good to see you finally have some time to work on your truck. Soon school will be starting up and you will be super busy again. Can't wait for you to enjoy driving yours. I know I love driving mine around!!!
