    Hi 65,

Just curious. Why do you think it's a "surge"?

If it's like most trucks that age, the wiring has experienced a lot of "creative" maintenance.

Wiring problems require a wiring diagram. These are found in the back of the Service Manual. Don't have a Service Manual ? GET ONE !

If you have any hope of correcting electrical problems, you NEED the diagrams. The Service Manual will pay for itself many times over when working on truck the age of ours.

I don't believe there is a quick answer to your question. There are so many things that can cause the problems you describe. You have to start with an electrical system as close to "normal" as you can. Then start to figure out why stuff is going wrong.

If I could suggest a place to start it would be to check all grounds. Battery to frame, frame to engine, engine to body are essential to a healthy electrical system.
