The closed system is the torque tube design on your truck, the open system is as your modern day cars with the drive shaft/universal exposed or open. I would imagine your Mercedes is an open system.

Many thanks for your reply and advice. I understood it completely and it has taken away some doubts about what system my truck have for some responders. Its an 1950 model truck offcourse with an closed torque tube where the oil goes trough from the tranny to the torque tube connection.
At the same time when i am going to install the Saginaw transmission i will make a filler cap for oil refill in the tube connection. Its made of aluminum and easy to install a filler cap of a kind!

You are right about the mercedes W110 wich has an open driveline.

    Thank you Martinius.

    Saginaw 4 speed tranny.

I am not shore what kind a information you are after ? I understood that you wanted to buy an Muncie 4 speed transmission that goes together with the clutch and the trucks driveline ?

The Saginaw 4 speed with 2 groves fits well together with 3.55:1 rear end but you absolutly need the Patricks Saginaw 4 sp. conversion kit to make it work together, and to make the tranny to fit well together with the closed torque tube. Spesifications and pictures of the Saginaw are mentioned in another thread on 47- 54 Chevy talk.

I suggest that you in your case take direct contact with Patrick him self and explain to him what you want and how you think it has to be done!

Another advantage for the closed driveshaft is, when you go stumpjumping or off road-n- the bushes or weeds won't get tangled in the turning shaft. thats the only reason I can give ya.
