Does any body know the angle of the steering column angle in relation to the the firewall on the '47 through '54 trucks?

I want a bracket to secure the bottom of the steering column to the firewall. My truck has a powersteering unit and the column has been modified.

Since I am not a welder I thought I might try finding someone to make one for me.

    Thanks

If I remember right the column sits at the bottom of the fire wall where the fire wall meets the floor board and I think the floor board is 90 degrees to the column which is where you want to put your mount.... big Tim

Hey Thanks, I was just looking at it and thinking the same thing. The PO has converted it to power steering, so again the column is cut off. It just sticks through the firewall. I am wondering what's the best way to secure the lower part of the column?

I do have the hard, slightly angled gasket (and the softer gasket). The hard gasket has two screw holes that will secure the column to the sheet metal but I am thinking I should have some sore of metal holding it down there.

That looks like a great way to go. Did you make it yourself? The picture is excellent.

Quick follow up question- any suggestions for attaching the column end by the firewall to the sheet metal plate?

Im gonna sit in my '48 and put a angle scale attched to it and place it where it feels right to me. I think it was a little too steep and close to the driver so I to cut mine off for P/S and will mount it to fit me.
I bought my column mount from ididit off of e-bay cheeper. It mounts to the floor and then I made a column drop out of aluminum for the dash mount.

    Good luck!

I cut the hole to fit tightly. I have also made them with a tube and a set screw, slide the column throgh and tighten the set screw.

Once again, I appreciate the responses and this is very helpful. I was thinking about tube with a set-screw mounted on the plate. Did you weld the tube to the plate?

Thanks for all the help here.

Not on mine, but on the other one I welded it to the smooth firewall.

A piece of 3/4 angle iron bolted through the floor tight to the bottom of the column with a muffler clamp bolted through the angle.I have this setup on two vehicles. Works great. It will be hidden by the insulation and carpet.Hope this helps.
