Hope everyone is looking forward to a good Turkey Day tomorrow. I'm playing with the idea of replacing my 216 engine with a 235 set up. My question is: what rear end seems to be a good choice? I'd like to enjoy the truck at a higher speed than 45 miles per...nothing radial, but something that can cruise at 60. Thanks. Tony
Gears A typical 3.55:1 conversion is great for cruising but...maybe not for a three speed if you want to use it for pulling a load too. If you put an overdrive in and leave your rearend gears alone, you'll have the best of both worlds at a minimum of cost and conversion hassle. Think about how you plan to use it. Just my opinion, FWIW. Happy T-day to you too, Bob
Lots use the S10 T5 transmission behind their I6s. You would need to switch the rear to an open driveline, S10 4x4 rers are supposed to fit pretty well, nd will add a more street friendly gear.
Patricks in Casa Grande 216-235 engine swap. Swapping your 216 -235 full pounder is great but it needs your atention when doing the swap. Link to the subject;http://www.patricksantiquecars.com/articles.html Reference ; Patricks has all the needing parts to do the engine, the tranny and the rearend swap. This compagny is very good in service and you can call when ever you need and when help is needed. They are very honest and i `ll think they have fair prices on there products. When overhauling your 235 engine if nesceserry it is important to follow some basic knowledge. No problem, Patricks will help you and send to you the manuals on the subject when doing the swap. This is what i advice you to do when allready planning swapping the engine! 1, Swap your 216 Ci to 235(1953,54,56 and so on) and follow the easy guidelines from Patricks , everything is included like that you have to reuse the 216 flywheel and trannny plate adapter and the 216 startermotor. Single parts are available 2. I`ll advice you to buy a Saginaw or Muncie 4 speed SM420 tranny. The Saginaw with the 2 grooves on the input gives a very good working ratio together with your 235 Ci engine and the 3.55:1 rearend.Driving 65 miles an hour in the fast lane is no problem! N.B. But do not push your engine to hard in the beginning (after overhauled it) when you start driving your truck. Conversion kit is available. 3.Swap the old crownwheel and pinion and spiderwheels ( spiderwheels are hard to get hold on) in your cardan with the 3.55:1 ratio. This complete kit is available. 4.Checkout the status of your U joint-cross(es),the axle colar and U joint bushing! These single parts are avelable. Good luck with your great project.Martinius
Thank you ! As I've been biting my lips 'till they bleed not saying somethng along this line.. I've been enjoying a rather nice rear end all along..... She's a sweetie ! . Agelina's is O.K. too
Nate Just saying what yr thinking Nate I mean honestly, guys going on in great detail about rear ends and not a beer or babe in sight.....someone needs to get out a bit more
I had to restrain myself from those same comments. Leave it to the Limey to go there........but we all agree.
Back On Topic She's ~ no , wait . Task Force trucks came with 3.90 rear ends and Bendix brakes too for the most part (Colorado got 4.11's) so swapping the back of your SM20 to open drivelne then cobbling up (welding) some different rear spring perches will get you up to speed and stopping again too pretty easily . That's how we did it in the old dayze anyway .
