Hey guys, just seeing what you think. I've instated a search for a 60-61 hood for my '65. What?! Thats right, I want the old style hood. I love the fact that it looks huge and I like the fact that it isn't very common. I've already combed over every junkyard in Carson City, NV and Reno, but I've come up empty handed. I did find one at a Pick-N-Pull in Reno, but the junkyard sold the thing(actually most of the truck-less cab and frame)to an employee. Where are these hoods? Every 60 or 61 I see has had the hood swapped out for a later model one, so where do they go? Do the junkyards assume that nobody wants 'em and sell them for scrap, or am I just unlucky? One of these days, I'll find one and confuse everybody! Am I nuts for wanting such an ugly piece of sheetmetal so badly? Argghh!! --TrustyRusty
Good luck on finding a hood! I've been in search for a while. Starting to get very impatient. When you do find one the chances of it being a good one is probably about 1% out of 100. Find Superman, he is a member of this site. He has a 61 hood that is extremly nice. He is in Canda though. Shipping will be high. If I don't find one by the first of the year I'm going to get it if someone else don't beat me to it.
No way is that hood ugly! You won't see a piece of sheet metal like that on any new pickup. It's beautiful Tom in Steamboat '60 Short Fleetside (with a straight hood! )
Tom, hey I couldn't agree more! It must be that the people without 'em are so envious. . . I found an old style hood(in nice shape too) on a GMC-quite a rare bird, but not what I really wanted since it's flat at the bottom of the 'ovals'. The search goes on. --TrustyRusty
Hey Trusty Rusty, I've seen the GMC hood you describe and it is a rare bird. You're in no hurry though so the Chev hood will turn up. Keep the faith. Tom in Steamboat
I've found more of those GMC hoods than I have the chevy hoods. It doesn't matter all of them are manly rust. "Searching for the perfect hood"
Hey! Last time I was in Boise, ID, I stopped at a salvage yard in the nearby town of Nampa called 24 hour salvage. They're not open 24 hours some I'm not sure what it means. Anyway, they had a handful of 60-61 trucks and even a few early suburbans. THey aren't a pick-a-part place so their prices are a little higher. I got a couple of inner fenders there that were rust-free and cost me $90 for the pair. Not a great price but a fair price. Good luck on your search, I like the early hoods, too.
Hey this is my first post, but I am looking to sell my 60 chev stepside. It has old style hood, make me an offer, it was restored mildly yrs ago and am selling it without motor.
I found One! Today I found an old style hood, and a chevy at that! Tomorrow I'll try to buy the thing-I hope the owner is nice. :7 --TrustyRusty
RE: I found One! Hey trusty if you don't get that one i got two. where do you live. I'm in washington. If you want i can sell you one of my hoods. If you come pick it up or pay for shipping. cowboy
I think those hoods are ugly. But we all have our own thoughts on the subject. I am thinking of using a gmc hood on my 65 chevy. I like the way they look without the center bar, and the shape of the turn signals. Well good luck, the more of those hoods you take the less of them I see so I dont get depressed for not finding the one I want.
Hey Dead 65 - Ha ha! Oh well. . . to each his own! I know that people hate these hoods and everybody wants the later model 62-66 hoods. I think its kinda neat that you want the GMC hood. I imagine that they will become more popular now that you can get replacement turn signal lenses. I understand that the originals had the lens and bezel RIVETED in place. New ones aren't cheap though, expect to pay about $100 for a new pair. Check out "Project Old School" in Truckin' magazine next month, they shaved the signal lenses for a nice smooth look. I'll agree with you about the GMC hood. They do look nice. :7 --TrustyRusty
RE: I found One! Cowboy, What shape are the too hood you got and how much do you want for each. Can you sen me pic? Tommy "60 Apache"
RE: I found One! well i got to keep one for my 61 chevy and well the other i dunno how much i want for it. it is in fixing condition. Make me an offer of what you think the hood is worth.where do you live? if you buy i'm not paying shipping you and have arangements made or i can help get them made. Now if i get a pick don't be fooled my the primer on it that i have to keep it from rusting. there are a few dents and some help is needed to the hood. cowboy
RE: I found One! I live in Virginia. I'm trying to get this hood from a guy in Alaska! Trying to arrange shipping as we speak so my look for a perfect hood might be over. The guy I'm buying it from told me it was going to cost $500-$700 just to ship it. I have gotten quotes that told me it would be around $280-$380. I can deal with that. He sent me pics of it and it still has the original paint, no rust but it does have one small dent in the front. Anyway if this don't come through I'll holla back atcha! 60 Apache
RE: I found One! well trusty rusty had first wack at it if you contacts me again. cowboy but if he don't then i guess you can.
