In my opinion the best sound of american mucsle is a straight header big block chevy. Am i wrong? A 454 running straight header souonds so awsome!
i know i am going to have the exhaust welded up tomarrow or monday. vut it still sounds good. i got flowmasters on the truck but i put headers on instead of the exhaust manifolds.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Dec-15-02 AT 00:59 AM (CST)]I would love to put the 454 in to my truck but i need it in my crew cab. I'm slowly looking for a 454 i found one for 600$ but i had to put my money else where. When i'm done with my 1/2 ton i won't need a 83 cause i'll have all the power to pull and it will be able to handle heavy loads.

I got a 327 with headers and Flowmaster 50 series mufflers in my 64. It sounds GREAT. I was gonna go with the 40 series, but that was a bit much sound for my "barely over stock" engine. Didn't want to pretend I had too much power under the hood, then get my ass kicked when someone challenge me to a race. :):)

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Dec-19-02 AT 00:17 AM (CST)]well i'm glad you are happy with the sound of you truck you should be! Its your truck! I don't really have a big thing with small block chevys. I love big blocks. The sound of a big block with a preformance exhaust sounds so good(even stock) to me. Thanks for the imput.
Can't wait to get my truck done so i can do stuff like get challenged to a race. and whoop 'em
Every one says that a big block is to heave and doesn't put out hp like small blocks.OK so what but the sound and displacement counts.

I've never heard a stock or mild big block with open headers, so I can't really comment on that. Last year during Hot August Nights in Reno, I went to the drag races and saw an insane '66 fleetside. The thing had wheelie bars and a parachute! The guy lit it off and I almost went deaf standing next to it-it ran 13.5:1 compression on over 600 cubes through 5 inch open headers. I'm lucky I can hear anything today! Right now my truck's got headers and a 2.25 inch exhuast with "hillbilly special" turbo mufflers. I like the way it sounds at idle, but load the engine and it gets too loud(I like quieter stuff). I love the sound of new Smithys glasspacks, but once you break 'em in they get too loud. Someday I'll find the right sound. Let me know about those flowmasters!

Man if i could get a big block with over 600 cubes i would love it. when i build my big block i'm going to run 10:1 probably. the flomasters sound good. but when i go big block i'm putting cherry bombs or glass packs right off the header. but my dream engine is a 496 stroker with ovber 600 ft lbs of tourqe and over 600 horse.

Yeah, I love big blocks too, but my budget keeps me from getting one. I'm mighty happy with my current 355. Next summer I might build a big block just for the heck of it. I like building engines more than trucks, but engines are worthless without something to put 'em in. I even like the old sixes. The machine shop where I build my small block had an old 235 with a bunch of nostalgia parts like an Offy intake and valve cover. It also had fenton headers and a Mallory distributor. It looked so clean and new I got jealous. I just need to build another motor! Hmmmmmm. . . maybe I'l go polish some chrome on my mouse.

As of now Im running a 283 with Flowtechs and Cali. turbos. They sound alright .......but theyre not Flowmasters....just dont have "that" sound.
When I get my 327 done I will have a set of 40 series on it.

I buy and sell trucks quite a bit. I"m always trying different mufflers. So much can make a difference. If you dump them at the rear end for example or if you have echo tips out back.
I like flow master's but they've become so common they are the 70 and 80's glass pack. I like flo tech's aferburner's, they have a nice sound but do get kind of blown out, I recently tried dynomax's ultra flows and I'm glad they were on sale bc I wasn't real impressed. Some cheaper ones I did like were the hooker aerochamber mufflers. I tried some smitty's muffler's from jeg's last week on a 81pu with a stock 305 and they sound like glass packs. I haven't driven them 20miles and they are loud, 26" with 2.25 pipe.:7
I wouldn't want to run 40serires dumped at the rear end on something I drive daily. They vibrate so much, forget talking with someone with the constant hum. I had mine on a 82 like that and put the tail pipes back on.
