Can anybody tell me what year these trucks went from 6 volt to 12 volt? Also, what year they went from generators to alternators?

    generic answer

If "these trucks" are small GMCs, 1955 first series and earlier were 6 volt positive ground and 1956 and later were 12 volt negative ground. '55 second series six cylinder manual transmission trucks were 6 volt positive ground while the V8 and Hydra-Matic equipped trucks were 12 volt negative ground.

In general, 1961 GM vehicles were all generators, 1962 were a mix of generators and alternators (alternators usually on A/C equipped cars) and all alternators by 1963.

    Generator versus alternator.

Bill i would like to go back using the old fashion generator again instead of the alternator! I like the outlook of the old generator much better.

Is there any reason of not doing that ?

    Friendly regards Martinius.

Aside from much quicker charging of the battery, alternators are able to provide more power if you are running a lot of accessories. Those are the two advantages that come to mind immediately.

    6 Volt Generators

    No reason why not ~

In fact , if you take the time to hunt up a 1954 Pontiac generator and voltage regulator , it'll charge more & faster too as those old Pontiacs had power windows , radios and AC too .....
