Well I've been to all the number sites, in -liners and searched the old manuals project site and I'm not having much luck. I'm trying to ID this engine for accuracy and I'm pretty sure it's a 1955 235 but the numbers aren't helping me any. The best block casting number I can find is 3764__16. Its forward of the distributor and under a boss for a bolt and the boss casting obliterates the complete number. The number stamped to the rear of the distributor is F9518A. I'm wondering if this is some rebuilders number or something as I can't find a production number on the same area. Any thoughts on my mystery machine? Thanks Craig
Numbers Craig, I suspect you have a later engine ('60-62). However, your numbers don't quite seem right. It would make sense if your numbers read like this: Block casting 3764476, pad stamping F0518A. Bob
This is a 216... notice the nuts n top of the valve covers... This is a 54-55 235 block.....4 bolt valve covers, 216 style water pump. Fan is mounted higher..... And a 56- up block....notice the newer style water pump. Lower fan mount...
Thanks guys, this helps. I'll compare the pictures but would like to make sure the numbers are correct too. I'll be able to see better when I yank it out of the truck.
I found information at this site: http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/models/engine.htm#54eng My truck has a 1955 235ci. The photo with Numbers 'CON 3 J 255', indicates manufacture on OCT (J, 10th month), 25, and 5 = 1955. I had to rummage around a little to actually find the documents at the website, but I did eventually find them. They include from '54-'57.
Casting date codes Thanks Bilbo, that's pretty cool! Wasn't aware these casting date codes were there. I've decoded them on my Olds that uses what's called a Julian code based on 365 days per year. Bob
