There is a guy asking the following on the 55-59 forum and getting no response. Can any one help em out?

Will an overdrive unit from a 1964 chevy p/u fit in a 1959 Apache?

    Thank you,
Is a direct replacement? linkage, crossmember, spline, etc?
Any thing imparticular to look for or at before I purchase it?

Make darn sure the solenoid is good because if not they are hard to find and cost as much as the whole OD trans did to start with. The 6v ones seem to do OK in a 12v system but the 64 will be 12v. The transmissions on these old trucks just hang out in the air since the rear mount is on the bellhousing so a crossmember isn't a factor. The spline should be the same in 64 since they went to the finer spline in 65. If not just change the front yoke. Most likely will have to fab up shifting rods or at least tweak the old ones. Very easy to do, just hold the shift lever on the column in the neutral gate, put the trans in neutral and measure the distance from the hole in the arms at the bottom of the column to the holes in levers on the side of the trans. The top lever at the column is 1st/reverse and the bottom one is 2nd/3rd. The rear most lever on the trans is 1st/reverse. Don't fill with lube and leave the driveshaft off so you can turn the tail shaft to see if it's in neutral and once the shift rods are made you can see if it goes into gear and back into neutral. I wire in the OD unit going through the governor because I'm so absent minded but many just use a toggle switch. The first time you forget and leave it engaged when in reverse it's toast.

thanks, it sure seems the way to go if I'm going to any amount of driving. I found one at a good price and think I'll grab it for future use. I just got the 59 this winter and plan on driving her "as is" for the summer before I start the rebuild in the fall.
