Hi all! I've been looking in for a couple of months now and decided to join up! I came upon a 62 lwb fleetside w/ a 261/4spd in february and immediately tore into it as it had not run since '81 (closed up in a barn in west texas). Anyway, I just got the frame back from powdercoating, have the donor truck w/ a 350/400 auto, and now think I should just stay stock as this 6 cyl was an option (bare bones otherwise). I also think I may have to modify the frame/driveshaft to fit the automatic and really don't want to on an original. I am going to A/C the truck and upgrade to alternator. I'd like disc brakes, but in order to stay w/ 6 lugs, I have to use dropped spindles and then there's the problem of a combo master/clutch cylinder for disc brakes. It sounds like many of you know all the ins and outs; suggestions? Thanks, Bill.
Alright! Another potential in-line fan! I'm planning on keeping my 260 six also. There's a cool in-line performance website out there too. If you want to beef up performance, there's a lot of cool stuff out there to do it with. I'm planning on adding a four-barrel intake. Heard the milage and power is better with a four-barrel carb. ALso, they still make dual cast headers for the sixes. I going for the classic duel exhaust/glass pack purr. Also they have cams, performance lifters/rods etc. . . Although the bigger sixes respond better to performance mods, I just want to get the best I can get outa my 260. It can be more unique than typical 350/400 swap, but don't plan on racing anyone, just cruising and hauling. That's what old trucks were designed for.:7
Oh yeah, I've just finished brake system overhaul. I decided to stay with the six lug drums and add a bolt on powerbooster. It's way cheaper and less complicated than all that drop spindle stuff. Going in Sat to get them powerbled so I can get best pedal possible, then bolting on powerbooster afterwards.
www.mcgaughysclassic.com has nondrop disc brake spindles and six lug rotors for your truck.ive got their rotors on my 64.
