I have a 62 as well and the engine was so covered with grime I researched what to look for first. If the engine looks original and still has paint, the 235 was gray and the 261 was a kinda light green. The real I.D. for the 261 are "captains bars" (look like this II) and are located on the left foward side of the block and the right rear side above and foward of the starter. I did find the bars on mine and evidently they are fairly rare in 1/2 tons (regular production option). Type in 261 6 cyl on a web search and you'll find the same sites I got my info from. Good luck. Bill.

You may not have the right number. Six cylinders from '46 to at least
'72 have the number stamped on the right side of the block just
to the left of the distributor as you look at the engine. You should
    have a letter(probably an F, T or C)followed by four numbers, followed
by another letter or series of letters. There is a reference to one
261 in '62 where the ending letter(s) are N/A. This could be your
engine. ALL 235's in '62 had a code that ended in J, JB, JC, M or
    MA. The only plain 'C' code engines I found(in the book)were 283's
in '58, '59 and '60. If you have found the correct number on the
block, then I can't help you. If someone can't give you something to
look for that is unique to a 261, then you will have to tear the
engine down and measure the pistons, crank, etc. You may be able to
get some info off the head casting number, but I don't know if the
same heads were used on both engines. Oh, yeah, almost forgot, the
four numbers I spoke of above are month(first two numbers, 01 is
January, 12 would be December)and day(last two numbers). There is no
year reference except for the letter codes. I think you have the
    wrong number.

The engine number is located on the right side of the engine, at the rear of the distributor cast in the block. The last one or two leters will tell you what size the engine is. If it is just a 7 didget number and it is a 235 it will be a 3764476. 235's will end in a J, JB, or a JC. I can't see it being a 261 in that year. It is probably a 235, that was the last year for that engine.
