My old 230 in my '64 died. I want to replace it with a late model 283 or 287. Will I have much to do to mount it in. I have the original 4 speed tranny.

    Hi Mike,

    OK.. What's a 287 ??

Seriously, That is one of the easier conversions. The 283 or 327 will use the existing 230 perches, just get V8 motor mounts. Take the bell housing off the 230, attach to the 283/327, install motor, get 15 friends to help lift that Granny 4 speed in place, and you are back on the road. If you can find an exhaust crossover pipe, you won't even need to add an exhaust system to the right side.

Yea, I did mine by myself too. I'm still seeing cross-eyed and walkin funny !

The only real way of puttin that monster in IS from the top through the hump cover opening. The Service Manual shows the procedure using a cherry picker through the passenger door !

Thanks for the info. I ended up with a 283 and am going to try this without removing the tranny. Where I came up with 287 instead of 327 I have no idea. Guess I was just seeing if you were paying attention.:+

Leaving the trans in will require that you remove the motor by unbolting the bell housing. On a inline 6 this isn't all that difficult. On the V8 it can be tight. If your trans cover is bolted down (as opposed to spot welded) , remove it as it will give you a little better access to the bell housing bolts.

    Good luck
