was wondering if i could get some help? I have a 1954 gmc with the original 248 and a hydramatic transmission. I want to install a 350 small block with a TH 350 or 400. What do I need for the modifications and is there a particular step procedure that i need to follow. also will I need to remove both of the original transmission crossmembers. any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.
The easiest and simplest way I know to do this upgrade is to find yourself a 67-72 Camaro or Nova sub frame and graft it to your frame. This will give you disk brakes power steering, motor mounts and a way better ride than you will ever get from a strait axle. The 67- 72's also have a rear steer which will keep the steering column in the right position. And yes take the cross members out if you decide to just use the frame you already have. All you need are motor mounts and a transmission cross member to hold up the tail end of the transmission.....Big Tim
I agree with BigTim...it's a great time to upgrade to better steering and brakes. I grafted a front end from a 78 Chevy Caprice onto my 46 studebaker pickup, and it worked very well. That gave all the mounts for the 350, as well as the good suspension, brakes, and steering components. Downside is you need a donor car, a good bit of time figuring out the best place to make the graft cut, and to assure your front axle ends up exactly where you need it and is straight and in plane. For more money but less work and head-scratching, several IFS's (independent front suspensions) are available that are designed to fit exactly to your frame. Remove the existing axle and weld the new one in, and most come with motor mounts as well. Very simple and quick.
