Hi All. I rebuilt a 235 engine that I intend to install in my '53 truck. Can someone tell me if the Rochester 5194 carb is a good choice for my engine? I don't know much about this carb, and I don't want to go through the drill of restoring it if it's not a good carb for my 235. Thanks...Tony
I don't recognize the model number, but if that's the standard Rochester one-barrel, yes, they are what came stock, and are pretty good. There were tons of 'em made, and used for years, so parts are readily available too. Pretty sure there are rebuild kits at FLAPS or the unmentionable auction site. Simple, easy rebuild - and provisions for your dash mounted throttle and choke cables too. Let us know if you run into problems along the way.
My local FLAPS has a rebuild kit on the shelf for these. One kit under $20 will rebuild a myriad of different models. As Nate says they all leak, at the upper float gasket. I was able to slow it down to hardly noticable using two gaskets. Do not over tighten the screws as is the tendency as you only warp the upper cover piece even more. Easy rebuild operation. Long lived carby too! Flashlight
Tony, if you decide to go with this carb, make sure it fits on your intake manifold before you rebuild it. 216 6 cylinder and 235 6 cylinder intake manifolds are different and the carbs are not interchangable. Trust me on this one. Don't ask me how I know! Good luck, Ken
