Hello everyone, I just received an order from Classic Parts of a “47-50 door felt kit – standard” for my 49’ Pick-up which it says it includes both the door glass channels and the anti-rattle beaded window seals. The thing is, the anti-rattle seals state on the site that there’s enough for both doors but I can barely make 1 door with them (it's just 2 of them, check pictures). So am I missing something here? Because as far as I know you need 2 pieces for each door. Also, if someone has any detailed information about the installation of these I'd be thankful. Hope someone can help, thanks in advance. Re: You are definitely missing a couple of felt seals. It takes four of them to do both doors. I mounted mine with weatherstrip cement. The factory installation was with some type of staple, which I doubt is avaialble to the public anymore.
Yes, most kits only come with 2 felts, even though you need 4. Just order 2 more felts and be on your way.
I assume the "felt kit" is only two pieces because originally felt was only on the interior side of the glass, therefore only one piece per door required. My truck never had felt on the outside. On the exterior side of the glass was a rubber piece lower in the door. That is the outer rubber window seal, Part 03-711. Harold
That sounds reasonable. Felt would hold water or let it through. Wouldn't be cool in below freezing weather...
Hmm.. so originally the felts were on the inside and on the outside only the outer rubber seals? I feel like with that configuration the window will slam against the door when closing it, does anyone have pictures of a door using those 2? Damián.
Re:Felts Strips I had one piece windows in my 53 for a while and I glued rubber strips on the inside frames. Could be the way you stated for the earlier trucks. Anyway, here's how I set up the felts when going back to wing windows. Sorry not the greatest of pics.
Your window channels are what hold the window in place, not the felts. As haroldB stated above, the felt that you have is mounted to the inside frame(I use tiny sheet metal screws) and the outside has a rubber wipe that slides in a track inside the door. The hardest part is getting the old rubber out of the track. Chris
Here is a picture of one with the original 1949 rubber piece still in place and in bad need of replacement. It's been thirty-plus years since the tracks and felts were replaced and after I read what Chris says maybe that's why the rubber wasn't replaced. Harold
Check the how to assemble thread, I documented how to install these. I put felts on both sides of my windows also.
Thanks for the replies and pictures, I think I'll try first with 1 felt and see how it goes. I still have some doubts though. The felts came with no bent corners, is there an easy way to bend them to the shape of the window without messing them up? About the installation of the window channel, does it go all the way down where the arrows in the picture show? if so how do you attach it there? Thanks again! Damián
Gently bend them by hand to proper contours. Yes, the felt goes that far down, adhesive as far down as you can, then don't worry about it. The glass will keep this part in place. The adhesive is really needed around the top frame, where the felt may slip when the window is rolled down.
Russ, I'm tellin' ya', Get that thread printed into a 'How to' manual and everybody who owns one of these trucks will buy one. I've yet to do that rubber wipe, but I looked over the installation real good too. Looks like that needs to be installed pretty much before anything else inside the door.
