I have read several post on this subject, but I have yet to understand what parts I need. I have a 63 1/2 ton with a three on the tree. I want a 5 speed. Does anyone know what I need and what I will have to change in order to make it work.
I have a '64 Chevy fleetside with a 250 L6. I just recently began getting it ready for the street again after nearly three years of staring at it in the driveway. I put a t-5 5-speed from an '84 Firebird w/V6, in it using all of the original clutch parts except clutch plate itself. I used an '85 Astrovan clutch. This way I was able to retain the 11" setup. I ran short of cash so I haven't gotten a carburetor yet, so I don't know how well this setup is going to work on the road but everything is working properly sitting still. My original 2-piece driveline is about 6" too long so I located another 1-piece driveline that fits perfect. I don't know what it came from because it was just lying on the ground at the salvage yard. I had to grind the hub on the new clutch plate to allow it to slide back and forth enough to disengage. Different manufacturers make their clutches different so this may not always have to be done. If you decide to use a t-5 the shifter is located differently on the ones from s-10s than the ones from cars. I have bucket seats so the shifter being located farther back on the tailshaft didn't bother me, but if you have a bench you probably want to get a tranny from an s-10, the shifter is farther forward. There is more to it than this so feel free to ask me any questions you have. I've gotten most of my info from digging through all the different message boards. I don't suggest going by what just one tells you, I've read many different articles on the subject and used the info from each one that best suited me. I'll try to find some of these articles and post links here. Ken
