ok i am ready to have my truck repainted.. wondering what the nominal price would be? I didnt do a frame off job as i wanted to keep it drivable so i could have fun with it while i worked on it, and not loose interest, had the truck for many years now, it had a very marginal paint job on it when i got it.. looked like it had been painted by owner with poor skills.. since then i have buffed it out,, fixed flaking paint, replaced or repaired may of the sheet metal panels etc.. every time i work on it i end up blending paint to match best i can.. so it looks good to drive.. now i have preatty much gone thru the truck and fixed every thing, it great and looks really good at 20ft.. LOL. now the last thing it needs is a strip and repaint. I would like to take all chrome, windows, interior newwood bed etc, back out and take it to a body shop.. have them strip all the old and different paint layers off.. rattle the fenders off etc.. do minor body work, block sand, prime and repint inside and out.. then i will reassembly at home.. has anybody had this done recently.. what was the nominal cost? I see shows on TV that inticate they pay like 1500 bucks to a shop to do it.. then i hear stories of paint jobs costing 10K.. what would be the average cost for something like this? 3 k? 5k? i dont want anything real fancy just a nice red paint job.
recent quote i heard A friend of mine has a chrysler that needs light body work and some filling block sanding. it is fairly solid and patch panel squared away just a few dents and some light surface rust. He prought it to a shop that does repair and restoration, He was told they will bead blast( soda blast ) clean it to bare metal prime it with a poly primer do body work , sand and paint price $10-$12k needless to say he went to Eastwood and bought some bondo and has begun finishing it himself Bill
People always make fun of Maco paint jobs but I had my 37 painted by them about 6 years ago and I think it cost around 800.00 and it looks great not a high point show car job but very presentable
Then again, I have this box of rattle cans... Best thing might be ask around and check out their work. Otherwise, I'm thinking there is some good "how to" videos if you don't want to try and win "best paint" in the next show. I'm painting mine because I want purdy, and I will be using it as a work truck. Also, I just love doing it myself. It ain't great, but I like it and that's what matters. Good luck with your truck!
Sounds like you have some experience in body work so why don't you strip and prep it yourself then find a painter to just lay down the paint. If all they have to do is walk in and paint then walk out it won't cost you much at all.....Big Tim
Most body shops will not guarantee their work unless they have stripped it down themselves and done all of the prep work before painting!
The 53 cost $6800 for them to hand strip/ work and paint, completely dissasembled. Took 1 1/2 years. The 62 Ferd is $10k, took 5 months and he is helping to reassemble it ( he is 2 doors down from our shop) Maaco.....$1200 to slick up with Bondo and spray white on the 67 Impal SS we got driveable for my neighbor...it is a seller.
wowser.. 10- 12k hard too swallo.. thats what i was afraid of. I do have paint and body work experence.. I did a restore a about 15 years ago and did the body work and paint.. turned out really good.. just wanted to prove to myself i could do it.. but wow it took me a long time...working nights and weekends.. sand and sand some more... I told myself i would never do it again. i did give the macco paint job seruous thought. and i might try it.. it would look better than it does now.. I think..LOL really looking for something in between.. macco 800 and 12 k at a full shop cost.. I'll let you know if i find somthing.
Paid approx $7000 for my truck and gave my painter the truck part for part. He made little bit metal work and paint it. Used not a special color, simple an universal paint and it seem it's a normal price.
I just had an estimate last week. Was quoted $5-6K. You might also check into area votechs that teach autobody. Sometime's they will paint it for the cost of paint and supplies. I saw a few from a Jr. college and they looked pretty good.
High School auto shop classes may do it for an interesting project. The trick to a good Maaco job is to strip all of the trim off before hand. They only get about an hour to tape off, without all that trim they can do a better job on the body itself. I had my old Buick wagon painted at a place called The Peach painted for $400, no jambs, I took off the roof rack and etc. They did a good job, only found 4 pieces of trash in it. There is a local guy that does all B.J.'s work for about $2000-4000 AND DOES A GREAT DRIVER PAINT JOB.
Resale Re Sprays What Russ said ! . I used to build used cars and had a regular cheapo painter , I'd strip off as much as I could and it always made a big improvement as the labor is the biggest single thing in Auto Body & paint works . Two weeks ago I had One Day do SWMBO's wretched Toyletta Corroded , I hate that car , now the grand daughter has it and loves the way it looks ~ they really did well for under $1,000 too as we (The City) have been sending them re sprays for 30 + years now . If I never see that dang tin can again , it'll be too soon . To make things worse , it runs & works *perfectly* ~ everything on it . Ughh .
I've promised an account of costs of the 52 rebuild and still haven't gotten the time to total up the labor, but I can tell you the cost of the paint and supplies, including a bit of filler, sanding paper, primers, sealers, undercoats, etc, was $2886. Just the stuff we bought, not any time or labor. I would estimate that a good paint man would have at least 40 hours in final prep, masking, and painting if you're doing a complete, interior/exterior job and you've got all of the major bodywork done to the 95% point. That's just a WAG, but I can't see it taking much less if you're really doing a quality job... tjs
