Hello, I have one question again. After I have made a test drive with my truck, I noted that the clutch wanted not work in the higher gears. So I think I have to chance the old one and set in a new kit. My question is, can I chance the clutch without replace the engine? And one more: Witch clutch kit will fit for my truck? I have a 235 engine, and the truck is build 1953. Asks Wolfgang
Clutch Service You take the transmission out , not the engine . Then you measure the flywheel's working surface and count the number of splines on the tranny input shaft as several different clutch diameters are possible and the spline count can vary too . Then you can order up a new clutch . Remember to get a couple spare tranny to bell housing bolts that are 100MM or so long , cut the heads off and chamfer the edges , screw them into the bell housing and they'll make perfect alignment pins so you won't damage the clutch .
Just my two cents worth. I had a large truck clutch, and a smaller sedan clutch. Somebody chime in here, one was like 10 1/2 inch and the other 9 1/2 inch. I ended up putting the sedan clutch and pressure plate into the truck bell housing and everything went togather fine and works well together. The sedan weighed as much as the truck anyhow. So if you start getting confused about clutch sizes its not a big deal to a truck that is not overloaded. I'm sure Zig and Wolf will have lots to say about their super sized, super working GMC's. The parts interchangability is wunderful!! Flashlight
I just completed installing my clutch/pressure plate assembly. My engine is a 1955 235, and it had a 9 1/8" clutch with 10 splines. Note that the pressure plate bolt holes in the flywheel are about 3 inches inside the outer diameter... Get all your measurements before you go for the new clutch. I bought a 'kit' that had clutch/pressure plate, crankshaft bushing, and throw out bearing, all in one box. As for the 3 years thing.... I started on mine in Sept 2007, so I have no comments with regard to that.
Problem was .... Hello, its embarrassing, more than embarrassing. What was the reason for my problem with the clutch: I let for over 2,5 years the engine restoring by a father of a pupil which was in my class. The motor was hanging on a enigne crane where I assmbled some parts of the engine. I can remember that I had a look on the clutch with a friend, four eyes can see more than two, and we decided that the clutch was okay. So I put the clutch kit on the flying wheel with a few screws, why I did this I can'nt remember. I did not screw the bolls thight, just only tangible. I wanted to set all screws later. And you will guess what will happend! I forgot to fix all screws to the flywheel put the gear box on the flywheel housing after I fixed the cab on the frame. Everything seems okay. For two weeks ago we made a test driving with the truck and I wonder why I couldn't adjust the clutch pedal. Okay, I thought may be it need a while and the mechanic need to cue in. After it will not I wrote the threat here. I took the truck on my lifting platform, take off the gear box and saw what I done! I think I had have more than luck that nothing else will be damaged while driving with the truck. I'll give you a feedback if made another test drive next week. All to you a great thank you for answering Wolfgang PS: What did we learn about this work quickly or flashlight says "Junge, mach schnell!"
