I have a 62 Chevy 1/2 ton stepside with a 235 and automatic Powerglide and I need to either rebuild the engine or get another. I have a cousin who has just recently totaled his 1985 GMC Sierra stepside (probably 1/2 ton, because its pretty much identical in size to mine) with a 305 and automatic transmission. The insurance is not going to go to far for him, so he said I can take whatever I want (eng., tranny, rear end,...). Could this be something I should consider?

If anybody can give any advice or tips, I would greatly appreciate it.

The 305 is not too bad of a small block not a hole lot of power when stock but with alittle attention they can be a pretty nice all around motor. Very dependable motor.

The only issue I have with a 305ci in that year range is the cam. I had one in a Cutlass and had to drop 2 cams in it. My mechanic said that they are known to wear the lobes down especialy on the eighth cylinder.
You might want to consult a good mechanic about it before you go all out.
