I really really like the Altman latches but didn't want to spend that much right now. I tried to order a stock replacement from our sponsor but learned that they had stopped selling the 47-51 latch due to numerous problems they were having with it. (LMC has also discontinued this item as well) They said that only one company was manufacturing these and they won't carry it anymore unless they can find another viable source. I have been able to locate them on other sights but I'm leary. Does anyone know of another option (besides the bearclaw) that wont require much modification?
DOn't catch, don't stay, ended up putting on latch savers on new repro latches, still had to slam the door multiple times. Trust me, the easy latches are WELL worth the money. I just installed my third set on the 53 at the shop, he was amazed. you can close the door with one finger.
AD Door Latches I don't know who carries them but there is *one* mfr. of decent qualiy AD door latches . I have seen them in use , they're fine . I decided to buy some NOS ones , from Joe IIRC , also well worth the $ .
I'm scratching my head here. I've looked them up and can't seem to find the right site. I even followed the link on the Stovebolt page and it takes me to a site for big rigs & busses. Is he still in business?
Robert: The "problem" latches can be used with a couple of mods. I bought a set (there are still vendors who have inventory and have no scruples about trying to get rid of it knowing the problem) and made the modifications. 1) you will need to take a small file and file the hole the handle rod slides into. This takes about 2 minutes. 2) the lock mechanisms seem to be a bit tight. Grease them up and work it out. I may someday upgrade to a better system but for now these work very well. If your pre-1952 door handles droop like your ____ after age 65 you can buy new springs that are easy to install and will solve the problem like a dose of Viagra.
Thanks Charles, sending BT a pm. Jim, are your saying that the two main problems with the repo stuff were the hole being too small & not enough lubrication? (by the way, after prostate, cancer I'll take the Viagra)
No the hole is correct but the handle goes through two square holes and they don't match up exactly preventing the handle to slide through. A simple file through it will open it enough to get the handle in. The other problem is the lock which is rather hard to turn. I would suggest cup grease after an hour or two of working it. The latch can be made to work. Good luck!
